  • Electronic Rust Protection causing corrosion on Wheels?

    Hi all,

About 18 mnths ago, I put one of the electronic rust prevention devices on my rig (2003 mod). I admit washing the thing isn't high on my list of things to do on a weekend, but being bored enough this afternoon, I noticed that there was slight 'bubbleing' on all of the wheels, inc the spare. Not widespread, just in a couple of places on each.

It's been on the beach more than a few times, but gets a wash down every time, so I was wondering:

    a) Anyone else noticed anything similar on their wheels and if so, do you have an E R P device onboard?
    and
    b) Not being particularly savvy with electrolisis etc  , is it likely to be a by product of the E R P device activity?

Would be interested to hear your thoughts.

    Regards

i might be barking up the wrong tree here but every vehicle i or my family has own'd that has had some sort of rust protection put on it has rusted like a bastard , in fact twice as fast or more .forgive me for my ignorance but i believe these gagets work on electric fields . run an electric field through a boat siting in salt water and see what happens . im drunk and open to being shot down in flames . mine is also a 2003 ,ive only owned it for 11 months , it was garaged and lived within 300ft of salt water ,owned by my father . it goes to the beach at least twice a week since ive owned it . but it does not go in the water. no signs of corrosion except around the sunroof surround .
03 grande v6 , with added stuff that makes it go places . RTFM people !

I'm on a boat, happily sitting in the middle of the ocean and we swear by electronic rust protection!
Mind you, our system would cost a pricey bit more than a couple of new Prados...

Still - there are guys out here whose sole job is to chip and paint... So, its still only a secondary protection device!

Car systems are capacitive not direct current injection, think of it as controlled electro static charge - which slows the oxidation process. Keep in mind that rust can not be prevented, it is a naturally occurring process, it can be slowed by various individual or combined methods - but never stopped.

It is unlikely that any correctly design/installed ERPS could cause pitting in any rims...
