  • Dash conversion to double din

Hi hoping someone can advise on the best way to modify a 2012 gxl dash to remove the little screen and replace ideally with a standard double din,

I have seen a few posts on here mentioning buying the gx dash kit which will replace the little screen with a toyota sized stereo spot. And a bucket for the existing stereo, and then they have to use spacers to fill the gap of the smaller sized standard double size. It would be good if there was a 180 x100 sized mount.

I called toyota in Canberra today and after first being told 650 for the gx dash kit or 2500 for the kit and a toyota gps unit,

He then went and spoke to his manager and came back and said he can't do it nothing available, which I was very surprised at,

I know there are other eBay trim options but at 100 not sure on the quality , match , etc I noticed from pictures they are missing a few details such as white symbols under the air con etc.

Can anyone tell me where the best place to get the gx dash kit , hopefully better priced than 650 , seems a bit steep to me for some molded plastic

I installed a double din in my GXL, very simple and cheap process using the fit kit which lets you keep the original fascia and keeps the switches in the original locations. A write up and pictures are here http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...l=1#post419514.

Link to the fit kit is further up the page

          Thanks Steve,

Are you happy with the quality and finish of the digi options facia panels and does the materials and colour match the existing dash?

And are you still happy with the parrot system you installed.

There is a new kit available from DNA:

              http://www.dnaaudio.com.au/index.php...n-2-parts.html

It's a lot cheaper than the original option and allows you to install any 2DIN head unit that you like.

Does anyone know where I could get a GX storage compartment, for the lower section, to replace to original controls?
                Cheers.

The digi options parts are only used for the a/c vents so you don't really notice them at all ie you wouldn't know that they are not genuine.

The Parrot has worked flawlessly for 6 months, does everything that I wanted. Spotify and Maps are the 2 main apps that I use. Only gripe is that start-up takes around 30 seconds and that has got better with each update, hoping to get an option to change time before sleep when switching off which will eliminate the problem.

I think the digi options solution is better because you keep the original Toyota side fascia plates and the switches stay in original positions.

                      Thanks Steve,

I ended up getting the toyota gx AC surround but I will reuse my side panels similar to what you said, mainly because I also have the reverse led display as well as the hazard switch,

I also wanted to get the bottom bucket for storage , got through eBay for 300 for dash trim and storage , all genuine toyota,

I ended up buying a pioneer Avic f950 with DAB radio, as JB hifi where having a 30% off car audio deal on Australia Day, so got it for around 1k and it had everything I wanted including App Radio where I can can control my iphone 5 apps through this unit. Browser , nav etc.

The only thing it doesn't have is off road maps however I think I will stick to using my ipad mini for this as I have the memory maps and converted all my hema ozi maps to work on this so have this covered,

Now just need to get it installed, trying to find a good car electrician to install and get everything else working , steering wheel controls, reverse camera , inputs etc. if anyone can recommend anyone in the ACT that would be much appreciated, Click image for larger version

The only other thing I want to add is Dash Command which should give me all the car computer info and dashboards,

Has one one upgraded the GXL reverse screen on top with Toyota OEM unit that is wider than normal double din. I know the Toyota units are not as good but could be used in the same space as the screen on top without having to change the fascia. I'm looking units similar to this http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item...d=321609104687

These units are wider than normal and include the steering wheel controls and reverse camera as default. Would I need other fascia?

That would require the GX dash pieces, but would work fine providing the wiring will reach, etc.

There are actually two kenwood units (630wbt and 993 something) that are sized specifically for the 200mm toyota gap. Might be something worth looking into for someone that doesn't want to use the side trim fillers but wants an aftermarket unit, will still require the GX dash piece for a GXL though...
