  • Towbar and wiring

    Hi all,

Ive just moved to the dark, or should I say reliable side...ive come from a wrangler....100 choices for side steps, bars, accessories etc.... just not very trustworthy.

Cut a long story short just purchased a gx, arb deluxe bar and sidesteps.... hoping I can make do with the stock suspension with the bar for a bit....

Also looking at a tow bar and just trying to understand what's involved in wiring up a 10 pin flat plug. I see that that Toyota has a 7 pin loom and just wondering what the ECU component does on this... don't have the rear sensors so don't need that feature and just wondering if it adjusts anything else.... also is there a way of adjusting the 7 pin plug to a 10 pin and wiring in a brake controller.... obviously have to wire the auxiliary and earth in....

And yes I have searched and couldn't find what I was after.....

    Thanks in advance....

The guy who fitted my Towbar used a hayman reese 7 pin harness which pretty much just plugged straight into the factory harness.
Not sure why you would need a 10 pin though...?
I wired my brake controller into the spare blue wire which came with it, which is what it was designed to do.

    Hope this helps.

What 10 pin plug did you use ?
I have only see 7 pin flat and 12 pin flat. plus the usual round ones.
The brake wire go's into pin 5.
Need the heavier earth wire into pin 3.
Toyota supply the loom and it plugs, into the plugs already inside the vehicle.
I fitted my own Toyota bar and loom, bit of work to make sure you get the bottom dust cover in and sealed.
      Cheers

I fitted my own brake controller.
I used wire that had two 6bs wires in protective sleeve, with a 5mm blue and 3mm red wire in the same protective sleeve.
Used the 6bs wires for caravan anderson plug, and connected the inside cargo area power lead off that wire as well.
        Cheers

Sorry guys that was supposed to read 12pin.....ended up getting the 7pin loom from Toyota and will take the plug off and refit a 12 pin....for a jayco....brake controller is next. Like the redarc as its neatly concealed. I've read up a bit more and the jayco only uses 2 of the heavy pins on the plug...so I just have to run those from the battery isolator. I'm just wondering if I can charge two battery's off one isolator as I usually have a arkpak in the back of the car.
