  • Transmission Cooler Help

What transmission cooler do others recommend for a 2012 KDJ150 Kakadu?

I'm starting to tow lately (sub 1500kg) and would like to install a transmission cooler to keep the tranny temp down on hills when the torque converter unlocks.

    Any advice or suggestions appreciated.

In particular I'm curious if others just fit a cooler and it does the job or do you fit a fan as well?

Certainly won't hurt, as to what type unless it has disappeared form the website there is a lot of info available to what others have done you just
    need to search.

Tried searching but it seems all the search queries were lost with the recent site upgrade. Doesn't matter what you search for hardly any results come up anymore.

I just purchased this kit for my Prado. Local mob that make it and it looks to be high quality- Looked at buying the components individually and couldn't do it.

Fair enough, most fitted the Craig Davies V8 cooler, a member of PP had some mounting brackets laser cut, probably the one mentioned above, here is a link to the brackets on ebay.

I installed similar on my 120, I didn't install the fan as it only seemed to be worthwhile when crawling and towing, I'm still considering it but haven't found a cost effective thermostate switch
          yet.

Would it be worth just running it flat out all the time Leigh? I did indeed buy Kaons brackets, haven't got them yet so can't comment on their quality but reviews seem really good. Was thinking about a thermo fan particularly for the beach and hilly trails, but would probably just have it going all the time if I did.

Thanks for the thoughts guys. For me and the 2012 3.0 diesel kaka I’m deciding between the Davies Craig 678 (21 plate), or the larger 679 (30 plate). As the Nice Kaon brackets are made for the smaller 678 I’m thinking the 678 but with the fan and a manual switch to turn it on.

Anyone think it would be better to use the larger 679 30 plate cooler or is the 678 adequate?

The 678 is made for a 4.2L motor according to the packaging- Should be well and truly enough one would think- I'll post some temps when I get it all installed.

Just keep in mind cooling is a good thing but you don't want to over cool it, if your not worried about the power consumption, noise and life of the fan then run it continuously if you like, maybe someone who has installed the fan can comment.

I’ve just fitted up the 678 with Tins awesome brackets. There was talk in another thread about not needing the fan as the cooler itself will be enough and based on three weeks with it installed I would have to agree. I am in a colder part of Aus though.

Been monitoring temps on the scangauge and they and they are sitting on average about 20 degrees cooler than normal, in fact I’m a little worried they might be too cool. Try it without the fan and see how you go, the fan can be easily added if needed.

ill be doing my fist bit of towing tomorrow, I’ll report back those temps tomorrow night.

Just fitted a 678 with the kit from Kaon, instillation video was great, total time was probably half an hour- although I did have to rip out my second battery and move some wiring for my spotlights etc. It's not a particularly hard job, most annoying part was getting the old hoses off the metal barbs, I basically had to hack the bottom one off with a Stanley knife.
