  • Dust Problem

Hi All, new prado VX in place with 4000Km's on it now and loving it so far, except for a dust problem in the cabin. After doing only 150Km's on the dirt roads over on the Eyre Peninsula in SA had a strong smell of dust inside and a fair coating over the dash and interior. Mainly the only vehicle on the road and not coming through the Air con. Looks like it is coming through the door seals on all doors. Had it into the dealer who suggests they may need to replace the seals on all doors, however they have raised a case with Toyota as they are not confident it will actually fix the problem.

Is anyone else experiencing a similar problem?

    Regards,
    Geof

    Re: Dust Problem

If you search for posts on dust issues in the 120 Prado you may get some ideas.
The big thing I found with my 120 is to keep the aircon on FRESH, not RECIRC, as this provides positive air pressure inside the vehicle.
The aircon dust filter needs to be cleaned out more often but it saves dust all over inside.
Various people found dust ingress points in the 120. It may be a similar process 150 owners need to go through.
If it is the actual door seals this is a major concern however.
    Cheers, Wayne

i experience the same thing, lead car on a dirt road convoy - dust all over the dash and floating in the air..

i'd be curious to see what you're outcome is.

I christened the prado over the weekend in the good old outback red dust of the north west and we didnt have any leaks plently of dust in and around the door frames but nothing actually got past the seals. Very pleased with the sealing quailty.

            Re: Dust Problem

I had the same experience in my 2010 4L Prado VX 150. I could at times physically see the dust clouds inside the car while travelling on dirt roads - especially when the sun was shining in the car (dust was very visible in the rays of the sun). I will keep a keen eye on this forum to see if anything comes from it.

              Re: Dust Problem

Have just got back from a trip up north Wa and could not believe the amount of dust that was in the car , travelled with the windows up and the a/c on all the time . But was under the option to leave it on recic as not to suck in the dust, this is what I did in my 120 and worked well :?:
But there seem to be an issue with the rear door seal as the rear pull out seats on return home which were never used where RED with a lever of dust on them . Has anyone heard of getting heavy duty dust seals fitted ?

                Re: Dust Problem

I have just found where I have been getting a lot of dust into the rear. Dust was all through the jack storage compartment and all over the left fold down seat even though it was never opened during the trip.

It appears that when I had my tow bar installed, the cable for the trailer connection was punched through a rubber gland under the left tail light into the area that the jack is stored. This gland was left hanging out or fell out and hadn't been resealed. Had to pull off half the rear bumper to find the cable entry point though.

Hopefully all fixed now with some good old silicone inside and out. Will see what happens when we go off road next.

Guys, how about the rear aircon? Where is this aircon taking air from?

                      Re: Dust Problem

                      Hi Darek,

The rear a/c gets its air from the interior of the cabin only, no fresh air. If you have a look at the right plastic trim in your cargo area, you will see the slits that look like a grille. That's the air intake for the rear. There is no filter for the rear a/c so if the vehicle is taking in dust, it's probably best not to turn on your rear a/c until you sort out the dust ingress problem. Once dust gets into the chiller unit, it's hard to get it cleaned out.....

                        Re: Dust Problem

Hi, I'm new to this web site and have found it extremely informative. When looking around I found Silvo's post where he flooded the cabin doing a very wet track. Water came via the bonnet/windsceen area when the bow wave came up over the car. If a substantial amount of water could access the interior of the car then why couldn't dust also access the cabin this way. Seems very strange that water could get in the way it did.

                        Regards

                          Hi Folks

Just done 6000k's on dirt, probably half at the back of a group of cars, here's my hints.

                          1. Run on fresh air not recirc and then clean the air con filter (behind the glovebox) every couple of days when in high dust situations.
                          2. Around the rear door the rubber seal actually collects dust between the body and the seal and needs to removed and the build up cleaned out.

                          Regards, Richo.

                            Hey Richo
Thanks for the info, on my 120 I was told to run the a/c on recirc as not to bring fresh air in , but have to say that did not work on the 150 and on the 10k service they did replace the a/c filter.
                            Thanks Digger
