  • DIY paint protection

Just finished putting the last coat of polish and sealant on the prado today and must say I am very happy with the result.

I went looking for a good alternative to the "paint protection pack" the dealer tried to sell me before delivery and ended up getting a bunch of products made by a US company called Zaino http://www.zainostore.com that I found recommended on some Aus car detailing forums.

If anyone is interested I used the "Z-Kit 1 Total Protection Show Car Kit" that I ordered from the Aus distributor http://www.zainobros.com.au (cost me about $250 including p&h and some extra cleaning cloths)

    Steps I followed were:
    1. Wash with Z-7 Show Car Wash
    2. Wipe down with Isopropyl Alcohol (from the chemist) mixed 1:1 with water
    3. Z-18 Clay Bar to remove anything else left on the paint work that was not paint
    4. Another wash
    5. 3 coats of Z-2Pro polish/sealant mixed with ZFX to make it cure quickly
    6. Spray of Z-6 Ultra Clean between each coat of polish from step 5
    7. Stand back and admire and try forget it won't look so shiny once I get it off road

    8. Wash monthly and repeat steps 5 and 6 in about 6 to 12 months time

It was a bit of work (took 5 or 6 hours!!!) but IMHO looks great and I reckon it's well worth looking into if you are keen to put something on the paint that's a bit more durable that wax and not as pricey as the dealer options.

Next step is to get something like a lanolin based oil to keep rust at bay on the under body - if anyone has some thoughts/recommendations for a product that doesn't collect too much dirt and grime I would be keen to hear about it!

my god - 5 or 6 hours and you paid $250  what would my neighbours think!!! Can you please come and do mine?

Nah, well done. I should try and revive mine sometime. Maybe once it gets a little cooler.

Quick question I am looking at a 150 and was told for 600 bucks they would spray a coating at the factory. They guarantee the coat will never go dull.

Additional care instructions say DO NOT WAX. Is anyone familiar with this product? Is it rubbish?

-looking to buy a 150 not get taken advantage of......

Once you read the fine print, after it has been sprayed on, you are required to have it inspected every year, and have a re-spray after 4 or 5 years. Don't use polish, and use their car wash every week. Had mine sprayed 3 months ago, only washed it twice so far, seems to be holding up. (needed a break after polishing an 80 series Cruiser twice a year for 17 years) Use a brush to clean the wheels, otherwise grit will get into the washer and scratch the finish.

        Yowie.
