  • Plastic around gear shift

I travelled 6,500 km through Namibia with a 2010 4L Prado VX 150. Admittedly no loose items should be lying around the gear shift but the odd 12V plug point multi point converter together with extra GPS etc at some point was stored close to the gear shift while travelling on dirt roads. The wood finish was damaged (by rather soft items "chafing" the finish). This is understandable as it is, after all, wood? The concern comes in when looking at the scratches and marks left on the soft grey/silver paint finish of the plastic areas around the gear shift. This together with scratches and marks left on the clear plastic strip reflecting the position of the gear shift (drive/neutral etc) is rather disappointing when one considers that the items that caused the damage were not metal objects but also rather soft plastic items such as sunglasses, etc.

It is obviously first prize to not have any item lying around that area while travelling but it does happen especially when out in the bush and dust. One would expect a material with a more hardy scratch resistant quality.

Any similar experiences or ideas to fix the damage?

    Re: Plastic around gear shift

I have the exact same thing in mine, same marks. Like you said it would be great to have nothing in there but reality is on a 7 hr driving day crap ends up everywhere. We were the same as in nothing that should have scratched it, sunnies, phones, ipod etc. Even got rub marks on the same silver panel new the passenger foot well from the wife with 5 bags (don't know why the have it all there but they do!!!) at her feet and rubbing along side the panel.
Don't know how to fix it.

Have a look at my build thread guys - you'll find the solution to this problem, my solution anyway and I even applied it to the silver trim on the inside door handles that also rubs off.

Hi guys - Been a long time lurker but never posted posting here before.

Before the Prado i use to drive the kluger and I hate the silver trims they put inside the car.

It scratched so easily making it look like a second hand car within months.

When the new 150 arrives I thought damn you TOYOTA you can make cars but your interior finish is CRAP.

So I bought the clear film they use for exterior paint protection and plastered it over the high wear area.

I put it around areas like the
        - Steering wheel
        - door handle
        - center console
        - anything that is silver inside the car.

After 1 year I found that the product does it job very well and does not yellow over time. However sticking down these films are not easy you need to make templates and trust me lots of practice to get it right.

So what I what I offer fellow PRADONISTA is a package to cover your silver trim with the clear film to protect it from scratch.

PM me if you are interested and I will give you a quote to how much it will cost.

I live in Strathfield NSW by the way.

Hey mate, I'm pretty sure I just counted 4 separate posts saying all the same thing?. Mods might want to have a gander and delete a few? Good job tho, Did you take the plastics off to wrap around the back to stop peeling off?
