  • Confused... what changes have been made to auto shift patterns by dealers

    My dealer tells me that there are no changes that Toyota has put through for the auto gearboxes so when I read about people having their autos flashed to makes changes to the revs at which the box changes I am not sure what is actually happening.
    Can somebody enlighten me please. I wish that the dealer could.
    Also when they tell me that the box is adaptive and that it assimilates to my driving patterns, what does that mean?? Is there a secretary in there who takes note of my mood swings (from hoon to conservationist) at any given moment. I often try to drive with an eye to economy but if this leads to the car thinking that I only want to drive like that it could be a problem. When I try to drive for economy is when I get the most vibrations and the engine seems to labour. I wish that I had gone for a manual.

    My 2c worth, the only alleged change available (my dealer disputes this as they don't know of any) is to correct the overtemp light coming on under certain conditions. This apparently (never happened to me but I don't tow anything) happens in heavy traffic whilst travelling uphill. Does it change the shift pattern....there is mixed opinion from what I have read.

    If you want the car to perform better (IMO) use 'S' mode and remember to select 5 as it will default to 4 or whatever lower gear you’re in when you select it. No automatic engine breaking but you can do that manually if required whilst in 'S' mode. Different car to drive IMO much more responsive and less lugging.

    Does the car 'adapt' to your driving style...allegedly....can't say I've noticed but I almost always drive in S mode and the misses uses D so I can't really tell.

      Hi Tezza,

      Not sure about my 120 but I know that certain auto boxes are adaptive and will 'learn' your driving style over a period of time. Cant say Ive noticed it too much but the units that are wound out more seem to hold the current gear a little longer than those that idle around town that seem to up-shift lower in the rpm range.

      my 2c...

        With my auto petrol 150, I sometimes drive through the gears like a clutchless manual, to pick the gear I want. I put the boot in every now and then, so the engine and computer find all my driving styles. Driving behind a slow vehicle, around 80 or 90 k/m on country roads, I can put the boot in, and the Prado will kick down to 2nd gear almost straight away and take off. Consumption goes up at those times, but the Prado will get up and go around the slow vehicle as I want it to do, without spending too much time on the opposite side of the road.

        For the last 20 to 25 years, I added Slick 50 to my engine oil every 80,000 kms (Landcruisers before the Prado). It coats the interior of the engine with PFTE (cannot remember exactly each letter) but it adds a protective film to the metal parts inside the engine and reduces friction. Slick 50 is impossible to find now (American product) so I use Nulon Long Life (also lasts for 80,000 kms) So far, so good with Nulon. An old mechanic told me to use Slick 50 many years ago, as it protected the engines of his vehicles (he was running high performance V8 holdens).

            I think your talking about the auto box in the diesel, under heavy load, eg towing, the AT light comes on, Toyota can change the sensitivity of the sensor (reflash), so that it stops happening so quickly, but with any auto trans, you should always fit an oil cooler.

              2. That one or any other number of treatments of such product reduces engine wear for 50,000 or any other number of miles;
              3. That such product has been used in a significant number or any other number of U.S. Government vehicles; or
              4. Regarding the performance, benefits, efficacy, attributes or use of such product,
