I will try lubricating the throw out bearing, but I am pretty sure that my issue is a problem with the syncromesh. I have narrowed it down to when there is load on the gearbox, or low revs in a high gear. It happens when I am towing, slowing down from 100kph in top gear (not towing), or going up hills (not towing). I have also noticed a whine (I believe it is coming from the gearbox) when driving, but stops immediately on taking my foot off the accelerator. I personally belive there is an issue with syncros, possibly they werent gauged properly on assembly. I don't try and shift like its a car, though I would have though it would be easier to change gear in the Prado than my old 60 series H55F 5 pseed, but unfortunately its not

Hi Guys. Very interesting thread. I have a new GX, just hit 5000 k's and a few days ago embarked on my first trip with the family towing our little camper trailer. This issue came to light 900k's into a 1000k trip. Damn scary when you have to shove the gear lever out of gear and apply excessive pressure to get it into the next gear. Initially my dramas were shifting 6-5-4 and 4-5-6 but now driving unloaded around town the problem still exists. Before the gremlins this was a beautiful box to drive but now is a real pig.
Am heading into Toyota tomorrow to log the issue and see if they have a clue.
Will let you guys know how I go.
          Cheers

Hi, I think if your clutch is disengaging fully and has clearance as you explained it is a problem in the gearbox. Nothing to do with the clutch.
The fact that the G70 made a difference confirms its in the box.
I had a very unusual problem with my 5 speed, 9 out of 10 swore "it's ya clutch for sure".
Wrong, as I suspected there was insufficient clearance on one of the gears and it was allowing drag on first gear synchro at all times. Mine had a whine also!!!
Once the problem started it was also intermittent. Super hard to get gears. The g70 is excellent stuff as it almost hid te problem.
It was 80% better, but I knew it wasn't right.
It's unlikely to be a synchro problem especially at lw Kim's.
I think it's a similar issue, lack of clearance somewhere, the gear may shift back and forwards a small amount which makes it intermittent.
If your vehicle has warranty insist that they drive it more and keep taking it back till it faults for them.

              That's all I know.

I recently changed the oil in my 2010 manual GX and noticed a little trap. It is easy to overfill these things. I assumed the fill plug was the level you fill it up to like a lot of older cars but it is not. You can end up with 500ml more oil than you need. Put in what the handbook says.

I changed it at 75,000klm (I bought the car with ~69,000klm so don't know the history prior) and it was clean enough with a normal amount of metal filings on the drain plug magnet.

Also a small tip, make sure you can undo the filler plug before you drain the oil otherwise you will have to tip the car upside down to refill the gearbox ;-)

                  Cheers Brad.
