  • Software updates and new tailshaft.

    Is it normal for Toyota to check and update the ECU during service?

    I have a couple of niggles with the auto box and after reading on here some similar issues which were fixed after a software update. I called local toyota and they said they don't do any software updates unless there is a complaint about something.

    Also said i'm sick of greasing the tailshaft and they are going to replace the tailshaft tomorrow and do software updates. Should i expect to pay for this?

    TBH i thought it would be routine in the service to update to latest software.

    They normally don't update the software unless you ask specifically for it and this is normally related to a problem you are having. That said I have heard of some people getting it as a matter of course. It really depends on what the update is addressing as most of the time it is fixing an issue.

    If your car is under warranty then no charge. If your car is not under warranty then they should have advised you prior to changing the shaft if a charge was applicable.

      If you have the vehicle serviced by them I wouldn't expect to pay a cent for this!

      Even if you don't I would be expecting it to be done under warranty if still in the warranty period, if not you would pay for the software update.

        You shouldn't have to pay for a software update related to a known problem irrespective of warranty period.

          The update may be an improvement not to fix an "Issue". It takes time to do and time is money so of course they charge for it.

            Exactly right. If you get it serviced by the dealer it should be part of the service as stated in the service manual. If you choose to save money and get it serviced elsewhere or by yourself why would the dealer do a softwear update improvement for free?? I fully expect to have to pay for any softwear updates to be done, but it's a small price to pay when I can save as much as I do by servicing it myself, plus I know the job is done right.

              True but I have yet to see an "improvement" from any update. They have all been fixing a problem. There may be improvements in there somewhere but I haven't found any.
