  • Automatic GB Clunk

Started up the Prado this morning. When I went from Park to Drive, I heard and felt a strange clunk. The sound was a bit metallic rather than a thud. Has anyone else experienced this? Its a TD GXL Nov 2014 with approx 9300km on the clock.

Possible, I'll keep an ear on it. So far, haven't been able to replicate it all day.

When does the clunk happen? Immediately when you shift to Drive, or after you shift to drive and then started to move? Have you washed the Prado just before the clunk?

Hi amts, I fascinated now. It was after a wash. Oder of events are:
          1. Washed and chamoised yesterday
          2. Reversed car into the shed after wash and chamois
          3. Started up this morning (stationary)
          4. Went from Park to Drive with foot on the brake and clunk/clang (hadn't moved yet).
Whats the relevance of the wash? Are you thinking sticky brake calliper?

Yes very common for the rear to stick after a wash. Need a drive to dry out the brakes after a wash, or if parked on a flat surface, leave the handbrake off. Or chock the wheel if on a slope. there won't be a clunk the next day. if it sticks pretty bad, it won't be a clunk but a bang.

By George I think you might be right. I never use the handbrake so it definitely wasn't it sticking. You want to know the other weird thing? It wasn't that dirty, just dusty. So I filled a bucked and realised I didn't have car wash. So (please forgive me) I splashed a bit of morning fresh in the bucket just to soap it up (I have never done this in 40 years of washing cars/trucks). Last night, I commented to my brother how effin shiny the thing looked. This morning, I ran my hand over the front guard in appreciation of yesterdays handy work. I noticed the panel felt sort of sticky, that is my hand didn't glide over the surface like a waxed one when you use wax car wash. I thought to myself, maybe the morning fresh dish washing liquid was a bad idea. The came the clunk/bang. So there's my story.

The dishwashing liquid has just stripped all those layers of wax and a lot of surface contaminants off. It's an old trick if you buy a second hand car to wash it with dishwashing liquid, then car wash to remove the dishwashing liquid film (stickiness), claybar, polish then wax. You just did the first step without knowing it, best to finish the process now. It'll be as shiny as new (or probably more so) once you're done

CT18 would do the same job but Morning Fresh is probably cheaper.
