Easier to pick up the wiring from the cig lighter

Yep, best bet is center console cig lighter. It is the safest and easiest place to pick up a 12V supply, fused at 10A or 15A usually, so make sure that you leave it inline fuse inplace for the UHF.

I have always hooked them up + and - directly back to the battery.

Same as Davros suggested, to the battery and back, but use a fuse on the +ve. To the deep cycle battery if you have one.

Have wired to the battery for years with different vehicles, that way you can use a heavier gauge wire without worrying about trying to find another wire, which in some cases is too thin for the accessory wired in.

            Yowie.

Mate pop off the rear of the centre consol that has the A/C controls and tap into the cig lighter. That way it will be on accesories.

Sorry to dig this up, but can anyone offer some advice on how to remove the trim at the rear of the centre console?

I have already ran the wires to the battery however now I'm having second thoughts.

Okay, I got the panel off now. The wires that run to the cigerrette lighter are tiny. There is also a spare plug at the bottom of the panel the doesn't connect to anything. Does anyone have any idea what this plug might be for? I will check for accessory power after dinner.

Tomorrow morning I will grab some wire taps.

Checked my UHF specs; I need 6amps. Will the little wires to the cigarette lighter support this load?

Hey Nath, how did you go connecting your UHF to the cigarette lighter in the center consol. I'm about to tackle this in my 150 over the long weekend. Can I ask where you ran the aerial too

                    Cheers

                      Hi Herz,

Don't go prodding with a test light into wires, you end up with problems down the track with that prodded wire corroding AKA green death as we term it.
connect the radio straight to battery.

                      Cheers Derek

I ran a heavy wire from the auxiliary battery into the cab. This will run every accessory and switch in the cab that way there is no tampering with the factory wiring that is really only designed for the vehicle and specific job. You can even take it a step further and power a relay to run anything that needs to go of with the ignition key.

                        Simple and works.

                          Hey Guys,

looking at mounting a UHF sooner rather than Later, still tossing up between the Uniden & Icom remote head versions, but that is a side note, can you let me know how you removed the rear panel to find the power supply for the rear 12volt plug please.

                          would really appreciate some photos

                          thanks

                              Norooz,

I recommend you run 4mm red/black in a black sheath (or similar) from the aux battery to the radio. Fit a fuse at the battery to protect the cable and stick with the supplied fuse at the radio (this is to protect the radio). I have been fitting radios to commercial vehicles for more than 30 years and to ensure reliability and reduce induced noise it is better to run the radio directly to the battery. The 4mm is the cross sectional area of the wire and it is a little over a mm in diameter.

I fitted my Prado 150 and my nieces Hilux (last weekend) and it is a better install to run new coax and new DC poer cabling.

Hazza has it right. In my 150 I run a VHF and UHF commercial radio and the Codan. I ran a 25mm cable (via a breaker) to my storage system and fitted a fuse box so that I could run a separate 4mm cable to each radio (8mm to the Codan). I also ran a 6mm to the fridge and a 16mm to the tow bar for the Anderson connector to the trailer. To my surprise I found this much easier to install and I also have much less injector noise getting into the radio. In your case with just the one radio I still recommend wiring the radio directly to the battery. You spent a few hundred on the radio so do the right thing and give it the good power.
