  • Factory Starter Battery in TD

    Hi Guys,

I've had my car almost 2 years and my factory starter battery is starting to fail, two flat batteries so far. Has anyone had any issues with the 150 factory batteries ? Also if anyone knows the amp hour rating I'm interested to find that out. I've now given it a decent charge with my CTEX charger, so hopefully its ok.

Also noticed the electrolyte in some of the cells is a murky brown colour, not nice and clear so any battery guru's out there does this mean it's on the way out ?

    cheers
    Rob

    Should be 105D31L battery, Left or right poles 12Vlt, 90Ah (20hr) or 72Ah (5hr)

Generally, if your battery has gone flat twice then it's knackered. Murky brown colour doesn't sound good either.

For how much a new one costs against the aggravation of another flat battery (usually when you need to be somewhere else) you should just buy a new one.

Wow two years aint much...did you deep cycle (fully discharge then rapid recharge) it a lot?

        Hi Riv39,

Nahh just standard driving, I did however wash the car one day had the car stereo on for about an hour, then later that day I couldn't start it. I think its a dud.

        cheers

Is it a GS? They usually pretty good.
2 yrs sounds like a dud.
Put a century marine pro 720, 750cca good for deep cycle also. About 100amphr.
If you can't get one under $200 p.m me.

Thanks #### its a yuasa, interestingly om my scanguage the battery voltage after cold start is 14.0 V, then after a period of time it sits on around 13.5 V. Not sure if anyone else is seeing this.

            Cheers

When I was talking about my new 150 diesel today, I was told by Piranha that Toyota batteries are designed to go with their alternators which are designed to charge at 14v initially but then the voltage of the charge tapers off to save fuel (this would seem to be what your scan gauge is telling you). Guy reckons that you are best to replace a Toyota battery with genuine, as all aftermarket batteries are designed for a 14.4 volt charge. Don't know if this BS or not.

The current genuine Toyota batteries are Centuary N70zzl's High Performance (not overlander)
I was quoted $210 for one just before christmas in Brisbane. The newer batteries are designed to charge with a lower voltage to match the alternator output.

wonder how a lead acid battery is designed so that its charged with a lower voltage?

I would have thought the slightly lower voltage is for fuel economy savings and due to the fact that we are a fairly hot climate country. Charging voltage should be reduced drop at higher temps.
stepped up the a 200 LC for towing,

Not sure. From what I've read, different cell chemistries have lightly different charging voltage requirements.

Lower voltage charge is definitely for fuel savings. I was also told the Ford Ranger actually turns off the alternator to save fuel. That would provide a challenge if you have a dual battery!

                            Hi Folks,

I ended up getting a Century NS70LX to
                            replace the original starting battery,
the other unit I was considering had much
higher CCA but was much larger and heavier.

Should be good for a few years.

                            Thanks
                            Rob

Also since installing the new battery, I've noticed significant improvement on fuel economy. I'm wondering with the older dud battery, it was putting more load on the charging system hence using slightly more fuel. Has anyone seen this occur ?
