Does it require you to also apply the handbrake?

I came across this whilst researching some other stuff. I've never seen one in action but it supposedly allows you to override Nav and entertainment. Is your pain worth $499?

Hmm sounds like it actually pays attention to the GPS speed as well. It's not uncommon. In an EVO X recently I had to modify to the point that you had to press a button on the dash which broke connection from the GPS antenna while you inputed updates then switch the antenna back on again.

I would take that option over my option any day. Interrupting the GPS signal to fit an inline switch will take it's toll on the reception. On an EVO which never leaves the city, no big drama.... for us? Nightmare status elevated.

I still think you can get the same unit cheaper elsewhere... but I don't know. Thats a lot of money for not much product if you know what I mean.

What you need is a dedicated Vehcle In Motion upgrade or module (VIM). Totally illegal and I don't even know if they do one for Toyotas. They may do a module for another car I might happen to have.

No affiliation and no I haven't used their module I only know it exists from another forum. It might be worth calling them and asking if it is available. Even if it is as far as I remember it isn't cheap. For off road use only of course.

You could probably. I wasn't actively searching for it I only stumbled across it when looking for something completely different a little while ago! There's bound be other similar products out there

Nah not quite mate. At least here in Vic the law still states it ok to use one provided... (taken straight from the Vicroads website)

A driver can use a driver’s aid such as a navigation device but it must be an integrated part of the vehicle design, or secured in a commercially designed holder, which is fixed to the vehicle.
no clue about the other states though.

Ah I am now better educated! The VIM upgrade will allow for the playing of DVDs etc too while driving, should have mentioned it since that may well be the naughty bit.

                      thanks
