Been following Prado Point since I took delivery of a brand new Kakado in march 2012 (build date Feb 12). Up until now I have had no dramas and its the first 4WD I have owned, but after my Kakado had a melt down I thought I would post its dramas and how Toyota are trying to solve it. I have been 4WDing since I bought it and have never had trouble, but last week when out 4WDing with a couple of other cars it had a melt down. Quite early into the trip I lost radar cruise so I had to drive the car without it but it came good after I turned the car off and back on. Then while 4WDing I could get low 4 and the centre diff lock switched on but the Multi Terrain while in mud n sand mode could not get me out of a sandy section my ford fiesta could drive out of. Brushed it off and continued until part way down a hill the hill decent control stopped working. The icing on the cake was when i had a rear wheel skyed I tried to use the rear diff lock but no it was off line too. Booked it into Toyota Albion Park for a check and the tech came out and asked if the vehicle had been in an accident as the error codes showing were as if the car had been crashed and new components put in and not programmed. Told him no the car was bought new and had only done 14k. They had it all day and finally found out that the wiring connections under the car were crossed and in the wrong spot. After everything was put into the right place and programmed it seemed to come good. When I got the car home I played with the systems and it all worked save for the diff lock it just flashes on the dash but won't engage so ill be going back again to see why its still not working. If the wiring was done wrong in Japan when it was built why then did all the systems work until the latest trip. I bought a Toyota because of its build reputation passing over the Ford Ranger but with this weird electrical/diff issue and the tail shaft now starting to clunk I wonder how it will be when I start racking the k's up.

Thats what I think has happened they may have played with the wiring during the last service or when the tail shaft was re-greased to fix the clunking. Whatever they did when going from high to low range and back causes a grinding sound and the rear diff lock still won't engage so there is still a problem.

ECU failure found as the problem by a different more switched on Dealership. Crossed wires was BS from Albion Park Toyota. Southern Highlands Toyota has been great to deal with replacing the Tail Shaft as well. Only problem has been the 10 day wait for the ECU to arrive. Not very happy with Toyota build quality lucky this is a lease car ill be handing it back instead of buying it out when its over. Only done 14 thou kms since new and 15 days day in the workshop, nice car when its working though such a shame.Last edited by kaka12; 28-11-2013, 12:44 PM.
