  • First off road drive in 150 - can't disable ESC?

I took my new Prado 150 for its first off road trip to Stockton today... But couldn't disable ESC... Which was a bit of a pain in the sand :-(

Tried holding the button in 3 seconds, 6 seconds and longer... Couldn't get it to disable.
I had a bright idea - pull the fuses!

No such luck - the car flashes warning lights and buzzers consistently if the fuse is removed. Very frustrating for a brand new car - and my first outing in it.

Make sure the car is either in neutral or park, and of course hold the button until light on dash shows.

The car has to be stationary, in D is ok. Push and hold until both lights come on.

Ok that's weird. If the car is moving only TC will switch off. Can you get that far? Doesn't need to have the centre diff locked just stationary while you hold the button in to switch both off.

Maybe I'm using g the wrong abbreviation.

The switch with the car / skid or swerve marks and it looks like it's out of control.. Positioned on left hand side under steering wheel.

Is this Traction Control or ESC? Either way, it won't switch off.

Slim that is the correct button and it switches both off. A simple push and TC is off. Push and hold while the Prado is stopped until both lights are on the dash takes ESC and TC out. If the car is moving TC will go off but not ESC no matter how long you push the button.

So neither TC nor ESC lights up on the dash when you hold the button? Then it's a job for Mr Warranty.

This is where I love my GX 120, no traction control just engage low range shifter the old school way and she is good to go. I am no expert with these things, however my father had a similar problem in his Pajero when it was new (I know, pajero right...)

It actually turned out to be a faulty sender, his traction control wouldn't turn off and therefore whenever the wheel spun it cut power. Hope it is something similar like this for you. I would say with the huge amount of electronics in 4x4's these days that it is a job for the warranty department and is a faulty sender. Hopefully for your sake the problem is there all the time and they can determine the issue at first inspection.

                Good luck

                  Slimf,

You don't mention what model 150 you have. I just went and checked my Altitude. Has the "optitron" display like Kakadu and VX, I think the new models may all have this display? If so it may work as follows.

First push of button "TC off" text line in small display screen between dials.
Long push 3 seconds plus, ESC light in left hand dial (icon of car and wavy lines) and the "TC off" text.

There is only one light for ESC. The tc info is not a light but text in the centre display.

If "TC off" is displayed and you toggle to other display info you lose the info that TC is off display.

While playing with my then new vehicle in Ruby Gorge NT I turned all the electronics off and managed to get stuck in the sandy river. Turned it all back on and it just drove out, with LOTS of noise from the TC and ESC systems.

                  Cheers

I had a similar thing happen when I was playing around with the h4 l4 switch. The check engine light and the traction control lights were on constantly and no combination of buttons in whatever gear got rid of it. I thought I'd try one more thing before trying to get toyota to find out what it was - just disconnected the battery for 10 sec and re-connected it. Lights were off and no issues whatsoever.

Turns out it was a loose connection at the back of the switch - dislodged when electric brakes were installed :-)

You can't turn off Traction Control in a Pajero only the stability control (ESC) at least in the NS/NT/NW series

Wait so in the lc150 if you want TC you have to have ESC on too? That sucks!! Most 4wds I know have the other way, you turn of ESC but leave Tc on because it is useful. Can someone confirm?
