Hi Guys,

I was wondering if anyone has installed a touch screen display like whats in the vx 150 Prado's into a GXL. I have asked Toyota when i bought the car if it was possible and they told me it wasnt. I wanted this screen more then the small one i got but was not going to spend the extra $10k to buy the altitude model just for this reason.

any help would be appreciated

I asked the same question when i bought mine , i wasn't happy with the crap that they suggested they could fit especially as it was an aftermarket accessory fitted by some bloke up the road
Any particular reason you want a touch screen ?

It can be done.

I have a touch screen unit to replace the piddly GXL standard one, a Clarion model, however, it cost me $2,000 (contains Sat/Nav, Hema maps Australia wide, Bluetooth, radio, Cd, MP3, etc. Also connected to the reversing camera)

To fit the larger screen, a new console panel is required. Toyota Australia states that the panel does not exist, however, my installer obtained it from a source at Toyota Japan, so the panel does exist but cannot be purchased in Aus.

Another problem for you is the installer is in Sydney, and he won't buy one for you unless you have him install the unit and panel.

Thats exactly what I want as I want to keep the original Radio etc. I have thought about buying a 7" lilliput touch screen and sorting out the electronic interface to suit the existing camera and display. Then feed the screen with an android or windows ce unit to provide the gps and maps. But this takes away from work time which I can't manage ATM. Another bucket list project.

I wonder if the touch screen unit/radio etc from the new 2014 GXL can be fitted to the earlier model?

The console panels to suit the clarion and other aftermarket units are available from Toyota but they are $900! They are available in Australia if you know the part numbers. The console unit replaces the existing radio and provides a storage unit in the lower part. But you loose the display screen display ie 100km/litre etc.

This is why i would like the bigger screen, not the fact that its a touch screen. Well that isnt viable for me to go to Sydney haha. The small screen is basically useless and only really good for is the reverse camera as the info is also available from dash read out.
That is a good question about the 2014 models as they do come with screens. I know my toyota dealers here couldnt tell me if they fit my model but i will try and find out.

My installer quoted the part number over here in Sydney, only to be told that it does not exist and there was no such part description available. He obtained that part at a much lesser price from Japan, because he could bulk order.

Do you lose the default screen that shows fuel consumption/range/fuel usage/outside temp with the aftermarket GPS models?

I know I can see that stuff on the odo screen but I like it in the middle...
