Kakadu sat nav maps

Hey guys, I havn't had any luck searching for info regarding map updates.

So has anyone paid toyota to upgrade the maps in the gps unit?

I have a 2012 kakadu with map info - version R18_v.7.

I have been quoted $380 from toyota for the latest upgrade but am reluctant to pursue a toyota upgrade because the navigation unit is not very smart with its directions, eg instruction to turn off darling harbour overpass onto roads passing underneath, turning into no through roads and one way streets in the wrong direction.

Once you're in the bush it has nothing.

Has anyone done anything awesome or do I get a hema, and plug in to a cigarette lighter and stick it on my windscreen?

Everything else on the car is awesome.

Unfortunately the factory GPS can only use the Toyota supplied maps (which come from Whereis) :-

Looks like they are up to v20 now but the link above is only for 2001 to 2011 Prados, an earlier page says to see your dealer for 2012 onwards Landcruisers (not sure if that includes Prados though) :-

Do a bit of Googling and you might find an alternate source ;-)

The system is not much use off-road so I now use an iPad with Hema maps for that. I have the iPad velcroed to the dash using a flip case and some 3M picture mounting strips so it hangs over the factory GPS screen, works a treat. If you do a search on here you will find some info on how to do this.
