  • Independent Dual Battery Installer/Reseller Recommendations?

ADMIN: Let me know if this is in the wrong place.

Looking for recommendations for an independent dual battery installer / reseller here in Brisbane.

If I go anywhere near a chain store (ARB, TJM etc) they only want to push the full $1500 Redarc / Optima system. I don't want (or need?) such a system ie. the rolls royce. I just need a system that will charge a suitably sized battery that will run my fridge and keep the beer cold (and maybe run a few LED strip lights so I can see what beer I'm drinking)... and that's it.

I've read through most of the threads on here in regards to DBS but I'm now even more confused! Help!

A mate of mine did a big tour around oz, before he left he went to an expert 12v joint and the bloke recomended he just upgrade his starter battery and carry a jump start battery in case he flattened it. He never used the jump battery and his fridge stayed cold the whole tour.

Just do a google search - a lot of people do kits and what not for dual battery setups.

I purchased everything online from places like ebay. Redarc has a pretty easy to follow wiring diagram. Ive used youtube to figure out out to crimp and solder battery terminals. I think if you plan and research enough and ask questions you should be able to do it.

ARB have a redarc for $409 with everything ready to go minus the battery itself. I think that's a good price.

Mine was installed by Opposite lock. Simple isolator and some cabling. - needs Leigh's voltage booster though to get a proper charge

If you are going to do it DIY: OL sell a kit which includes a battery monitor, ($435) then get a $50 voltage booster from Leigh + Deep Cycle Battery and battery tray + Cabling

          Wynnum Tow Bars

I used the blokes at Wynnum Towbars who fitted the Allrounder second battery and the redarc unit.
They ran the appropriate heavy wire back to the tow bar and installed an external Andersen plug for powering the camper fridge.
They also installed a wire, fused, to an extra internal 12v socket on the left side of the boot. That's what I plug my fridge into.
Work was also done on the wiring to the fridge in the camper but all this came in way under the chain stores quotes for just the dual battery.

I was put onto them by Prado Point members back in 2011 and I am extremely glad I used them - one of the best tips picked up on this site.

In fact, I regretted ordering the Prado with the Toyota tow bar and if I had my time over I'd go with the Wynnum Tow Bar. The Toyota plough is hopelessly too low. Well, that's my personal experience and opinion, neither of which will change

In the end its you money, if you just want dual batteries and a simple voltage sensitive isolator, you need to tell them this and say this is what i want or take your money else where. You can get kits off ebay etc with everything you need for around $500 which may be the way to go. If your not confident to install it go see an auto sparky and get them to do it.

            my 2c.

            Cheers Joel

Not sure if you watched my youtube clip on how I did mine. See below link.

              http://youtu.be/0pouMN9-CXI

I made my own tray, but you can find many types on ebay. Just decide what size battery you want before you buy the tray. I used a N70 battery and a Redarc SBI12 isolator. It works a treat....No need to go too expensive. Get the diode on ebay to so you can increase the charge volts. They are about $25

I did my own system, it was a decent price. I agree with your statement and there are a lot of miss conceptions with dual battery systems, the chains to be honest aren't really up to date with ALL vehicle charging systems. PM me and I would be happy to get your number and send you come photos and information on my set up. ( use iPhone as no home internet atm)

Any auto elec will do it for you, but you may need to guide them as to where your outlets/Anderson plug/etc go so that it won't be compromised with off road driving and potential damage.
