One of your trailer wires is shorting to earth. When you earth the trailer chassis through the towbar that is causing your problem. Is your earth in the trailer plug connected to the trailer body? You might have earthed the wrong one back at the lights. Check your lights. Even remove each and connect the trailer and see which is causing the problem. Could be the number plate light if you have a separate light, perhaps lights and earth back to front?

Thanks to all who offered suggestions.
I started working on the trailer lights this morning and on the second one found that on the earth wire join there was a tiny bit of copper showing between the wire coating and the shrink tube. Giving it a wriggle had the lights going on and off.
Cut off the tube and replaced it with a longer length to well and truly cover the join and all seems well!
Thanks again.

I have similar issue with the Trailer Module on my 150...using a Multimeter; i've determined the input voltages for each signal is good to the TCM; however nil voltage coming outof TCM to the trailer plug...
There is an Orange wire used to power the TCM (showing 0.3- 1.1volts) but no idea where it comes from.
Any ideas??
