  • Anderson Plug mounting on rear of 2010 D4D with tow bar

    Help
Looking for an effective means to re-mount the existing anderson at the rear of my vehicle.
The car was fitted with the anderson plug prior to me purchasing it. Unfortunately, the installer screwed through the plug (after enlarging the holes) and into the bumper using self tappers. (I should add that the trailer socket is also mounted in this fashion).
I've looked and am stumped as to an appropriate way of securing the plug.
Can anyone point me to a thread or a picture showing how the plug can be successfully secured?

    Thanks in advance
    Terry

This was how I mounted mine. Not sure if this helps at all.

I am going to do something similar but will weld a bracket to the tow bar for the Anderson plug and a compressor outlet on the offside (driver's). Trailer socket is on a little bracket already on the left but that is a flat socket.

Thanks Alberto, gives me one way to mount it.
Unfortunately my trailer plug has been secured to the bumper using self tappers so it suffers the same issue as the Anderson plug. How is your trailer connector mounted?
The tow bar fitted is a "TAG" brand

MJRandom, is it permissible to weld to the tow-bar without de-rating it?
I had thought of welding or drilling and tapping into the bar but was concerned I'd be introducing a weakness into the bar.
I'm happy to weld a bracket on to take both connectors

            Hello bicter,
            Couple of suggestions:
            1. Area near towbar always cops a lot of crud. Suggest you install your 50A Anderson plug in a weather proof rubber housing like this one (I used 316 stainless metal theads (3-4mm?) & Nylocks - not self-tappers!):
            http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/WEATHERPR.../291737310741?

            2. Yes maybe best to drill a hole in towbar & tap 2 x 6mm threads for bolts & lock washers, rather than welding in a rated structural member. Bolt on a 3mm steel plate suitable & mount your Anderson that plate.

            3. If you are using this Anderson for charging a trailer battery, for best electrical performance use B&S twin sheathed cable (positve & earth) according to voltage drop chart for length & current (Redarc & others have these charts).

Towbar is carbon steel. It is already welded. Not going to introduce any stress raisers or weak or hard spots. I wouldn't recommend welding if you can't weld neatly though even if some welding I have seen looks more like pigeon poo.

Thanks all for the replies and ideas.
I'll probably end up welding a light plate to the bar in light of MJ's comments (To take both the trailer & Anderson together). Drilling and tapping will definitely weaken the tow bar to a greater degree than welding IMO.

There are no existing holes anywhere on the tow bar at all? What about on the chassis above the towbar?

I used the existing screw for the light to secure one end of an additional plate which holds 2 Anderson plugs, one for the van fridge and a standard one for the van and camper. The other end is secured with Sikaflex so no drilling or welding on the tow bar required

I made up this to bolt up to a spare threaded hole above towbar.

There's a compressed air outlet plumbed from the air tanks behind the towbar and a socket for the trailer reversing sensors and camera

If you use the ABR waterproof anderson plug you can fit it and the seven pin plug (round) on the factory mounting plate. Just requires drilling a few more holes.
