  • Traction control on the beach

    Hey guys, first post.
Just got my 2012 GXL, took it for its first outing which involved some beach driving, and had an issue with the traction control.

The sand was quite soft so I was trying to keep the revs high and keep some momentum, but the traction control kept beeping at me and cutting the power when I needed it. Still happened when I turned T/C off. Also happens with the center diff lock on and in L4.

Anyone else have the this problem? Is there a way to turn the T/C off completely, short of taking off sensors, fuses, plugs etc

What tyre pressures were you running?

Push the button and hold it in for several seconds to turn off both traction control and stability control. Just pressing the button only turn T/C off, holding it in turns the stability control off. I can't remember what the light looks like but there'll be a light on the dash when the stability control is off.

You need both off for sand driving. Unfortunately when you turn the car off you have to redo it when you start the engine again, it doesn't remember the setting.

If your tyres are right, vsc should not intervene very much, but in long soft hot conditions where momentum is not an option turn it off before hand. As above hold for three seconds to turn off both Tc and vsc together.

Every time you turn the car on they are on and if you are doing 60kmh on sand they might as well be on as your obviously not having any trouble moving.

It first happened before I let them down (were at 30psi) then I got bogged... Went down to 15 and chucked the maxtrax in and got out, it definitely happened less with the softer tyres.

Yeah was pretty hot, I had to hold it down to get T/C off but cant remember is stability turned off as well. I'll give it another go on the weekend. Think I'll be moving to some much bigger tyres after the stockies wear out.

Sand driving requires low tyre pressures first and foremost. Your engine wont have to work as hard and you won't have systems working against each other.

Sounds like the stability control was kicking in. You only lose engine power when that is turned on. T/C shouldn't reduce engine power.
