  • Running fridge from stock Std setup

    Hi,

I am keen to get away for 2 nights this Xmass and already have a 40lt engel so I can run the cord from the back into the rear 12v outlet but the car will need to be on accessories to run, I have worked out I can turn the radio and screen off, Any idea what els could be drawing juice ?

Will go for a drive every day so it's Likely to only be sitting for 12-14 hours with accessories on can any one see any issues with this or have any other ideas ?

It's not good I'm afraid. I just measured mine with the radio off and the screen off, interior lights all off and runner board lights off. Something was still drawing a fairly large 4.2A. There was nothing obvious on inside the cabin except for the clock and its backlight. It might vary a bit from trim level to trim level... that was measured on a 2016 Kakadu (for example I don't know if the DVD player turns completely off just because its lid is shut).

The other thing I've noticed is that when I do leave it in ACC it automatically switches off after 30 mins or so. I'm not sure if that's done via a voltage measurement on the battery or just a timer. It briefly spits up some message on the central display about "shutting off to preserve battery" or some such. It also gets very upset if you take the key with you and try to lock the doors while in ACC... started a long external beep and told me to turn the power off first.

As dBC said, ACC powers itself off after about 20 minutes. But keep a few freezer blocks in it, minimize opening and it should act like a good esky for an overnight stay. For 2 nights away, you just need cold beer, milk, sausages and bacon so you can plan around the 14 hours without power pretty easily.

        Hmmm.... that sucks
I guess all I need to do is just run cable straight to the battery but it sounds like a lot of work for 2 nights when the alternative is a simple bag of ice

Thanks for the replys guys saved me some heart ache having a crack out bush

Just run some cables on the outside and through a slightly open window.

Yep, that will work fine...some people have forgotten it wasn't that long ago that we used esky's all the time years ago..we even did a Simpson desert trip with an esky...we just got ice every so often, kept a blanket on top of the esky, managed the food properly, drained the water, and it was fine.
We have a car fridge now, but we still take an esky, we keep fruit and veges in the esky etc.
