  • 12 inch tesla style chinese head unit

I am interested in this particular unit

    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Tesl...778a3c00XRD9p6

But from one of the demo video of this similar or same unit, it shows a ridiculous boot up time of around 25s. I also found out this time actually is in their spec, here http://smarty-trend.com/toyota-land-...head-unit.html

It says "cold boot time" which I don't know what it means. I like this style and i guess it would be easier to install due to it is specially design for the car. So I believe wiring will be a lot easier, plug and play maybe.

Anyone has this unit would like to share some experience with this unit?

Thanks a lot. On the edge of pulling the trigger.

The cold boot time is the time it takes to start up the first time and after having removed the power supply. The 'warm boot' time from sleep mode is the one to look at as if it is anything like mine it 'sleeps' when the car is turned off and warm boots when the car is started. The unit you are looking at indicates a 1 second warm boot which is more than adequate, and much quicker than the OEM head unit. The battery drain in sleep mode should be low that it does not effect battery performance.

I can't comment on your specific unit re performance but the spec of the one I got for my 2018 150 series is 4GB RAM 32GB ROM Octa-core PX5 with Android 8.0, which works very well running multiple apps at once (i.e Spotify, Torque Pro and a bluetooth TPMS). It is was pretty much plug and play (no wire cutting at all) and came with a vehicle specific CANBUS module to interpret the signals for steering wheel commands (and possible for other inputs like aircon indications, stereo fade etc..) Yours probably does but is worth confirming.

I don't know just how tangible the difference in speed is between the 2GB Quad-Core and the 4GB Octa-Core unit, but if you can get the higher spec for not much more it is probably the way to go.
    Best of luck.

I second the comments above and think that there is more support for the PX5 if you want to try different firmware. I am guessing that it is not available in a 12 inch screen version but wonder if replacing the air con controls with a longer screen is an advantage? as I assume the "main" screen would only be the same size as the 10 inch version and the bottom part of the 12 inch screen just shows the air con information??

Thanks for the reply. I can only find px3 for these tesla style units.
I am open for smaller traditional 2 din unit. I have ordered the trim for 2din on the top.screen.

Which ones did you buy for your prado? Specifically design for the car model? Easy to install?

Have a search on the forum for "head unit" and you will find several posts including one of my unit bought in 2017 called "head unit arrived" and another from PaddyB called "another new head unit" There is quite a lot of information about installing (easy) and what they will do. So far I have been really pleased with mine, although it only runs android 6.0, as mentioned above the more recent units are android 8.0
