  • Driving light security key socket not provided with the Prado - how to find a replacement ?

Hello Prado crew - I bought a 2016 Prado 150 series last September than has an ARB bull bar and Great Whites 170mm (18 led lights) fitted with some security nuts - and thats where the story starts ... one of the lights is beginning to flicker and quite frankly they really dont have the depth of light penetration I need for far north Qld highway driving ? anyway - Id like to replace them but the previous owner didnt provide the security key socket for the security bolts. Apparently the GW security nut package says they should record the code for that socket key - yep ! missing too !!
So how do I get these security nuts off so I can change out the lights? My thinking is if there is a code on the socket key there must be replacements available ? A call to NAPA today and they arent sure - but are chasing this up and I hope to hear back within a few days. I doubt Ill have any joy tbh ? so where to from here - how do I get the security nuts off without damaging the light threads and my bull bar ? btw the 10mm nuts have a pin pattern of 12, 4, 6 and 8.30 as if you were reading a clock face.
I welcome all suggestions!! thanks in advance - Gavan

Can you post a photo of the security nut?

Perhaps with a ruler scale alongside so we get of better idea of what you are looking for. While there are a lot of different security heads, there are a lot a matching drivers available too!

Could always just use a pin punch and hammer to undo it.

I got a response from NAPA parts today and their view is that there are only 3 of the 10mm security nut patterns - but unfortunately for me mine appears to have been the earlier one and none of their stockists have the original one. Typical - doh !! atms that does look to be the pattern Im dealing with :-) Ok GWA0002 - thanks for the number cuz that may help find a socket key to fit !!

i would find a bolt specialist and see what other types of nuts they have which would fit the same thread.

Like I mentioned use a pin or centre punch and undo the nut by striking in the holes. A few taps should loosen it up enough to remove by hand. Then just replace with nylocks.

Thanks Sparksy - My final approach is to go the 2 pin punch and attempt the screwdriver between pins release - but given its upsidedown and with very limited hand access with the ARB bull bar its going to be my last resort. Ive now found out from NAPA (Great Whites Lights) that there were only 3 Socket key patterns in Australia - unfortunately mine is the first and they only stock the latter 2 now - bugger
It looks like Im just going to have to put up with a flickering (expensive) Great White 170mm 18 led light that cost what ?? $800 ? I would strongly advise against anyone spending this sort of cash on these lights - well I think there is a better way to invest my hard earned cash - each to their own!!

Put up a photo of the other side where light sits on top of bar, Another way could be to dismantle the light where the mount is then unscrew the bolt from the top.
