  • Dual Battery on a 4.0 V6 (1GR-FE)

Dear All, First of all, I'm a big fan of PradoPoint although I come a long way from Australia (currently living in Dubai)

I'm planning to install a Dual Battery System on my 2012 V6 4.0 (1GR-FE) Petrol Engine, with a VSR and use the stock alternator to charge both batteries.

Things that I know (by research) :
    1) The OEM alternator's output in 130 amp.
    2) Maximum Amperage required to be used for my application/applienaces is 20amp (6amp Fridge/ 6amp Water pump/ 8amp for some LED lights)

    What I'm planning to do:
    1) Battery: Fit a 80ah Battery in the engine bay right side using a custom made bracket. I would relocate the Steering Oil Reservoir and slightly move the AC pipe (approximately 1cm)

    2)VSR: I'll be using a 140amp VSR with auto cut-in at 13.3v and cut-out at 12.8v

    2) Cables:
    A) Install a 4B&S (25mm2) cable between the main battery (Positive +) and the VSR with a 100amp Fuse.
    B) Install a 4B&S (25mm2) cable between the Aux battery (Positive +) and the VSR also hooked with a 100amp Fuse.
    C) install a 4B&S (25mm2) cable (Negative -) between both batteries.

    D) Install 2 4B&S Cables (+ & -) taken from the Aux Battery all the way to the rear of the car (approximately 4 meters) hooked to a distribution panel. (Positive hooked with a 30 amp Fuse)
    * Maximum amp required at the back of the car is 20amp. Using a 4B&S cable to minimize the voltage drop.

    QUESTIONS:
Q1) Is there anything wrong with the above?
Q2) For the 4B&S cable, can I use a copper cable that has a PVC isolation/shield with a 105 Degrees C rating for the Batteries<>VSR connection (knowing that outside temperature here reaches 50 Degrees C and Hunidity can reach up to 95% in summer) or I should use cable with EPDM-rubber isolation/shield?

Nothing wrong at all with what you are proposing. basically same as my setup in a 120. I fitted a 100AHr deep cycle in a custom bracket.
    PVC cable will be fine.

sparksy for your input. I saw that you have switched to 100amp breakers instead of the ANL 100amp Fuses. have you had any issues with the breakers with this setup?

If my Alternator is providing 130amps and the VSR supports up to 140amp, should I go with a bigger Fuse than 100amp on the 4B&S (25 Sq.mm) cables?

Ive since removed the breakers as they were starting to give a voltdrop across them.
