  • UNICHIP for 2.8l Prado

    Hi,

Just got off the phone with a dealer for Unichip here in Perth and was quite interested in the potential of it. I was told dependent of the specific vehicle I could expect anywhere up to 185kw and 600Nm of torque. Will wait to see if I can spare the money to get the chip. The beauty of this unit is that its a second ecu that needs to be custom tuned on a dyno. You have the option of having a bluetooth connection to your phone to switch between the different performance maps on the fly.

This will hopefully bring out the chained beast.

    Regard
    Doug

Check out the unichip Aus/nz facebook page, They just put up a video of using the existing eco/power mode buttons to change Unichip maps. I'v got one fitted to my 3L 1kd and the difference is night and day to say the least and on the plus side its plug and play.

If you can afford to play these are amazing improvements, however consider the cost under these terms : You can burn a candle for twice as bright but only for half as long.

Agreed however I do feel they have under tuned the 2.8l. Watch in a few years they will be putting out 150 to 160kw out of the same motor and selling it at as an upgraded version. Other manufactures are getting 147kw out of the 2.8l diesel they have. The other nice feature of this chip is it can't override the safety settings set by Toyota. Davo94 how long have you been running the chip? Have you found an improvement in fuel efficiency?

Granted, but the other manufacturers seem to have their own various problems with reliability as well. The old saying, there ain't no substitute for cubic inches, is a good general rule. You can extract a couple of K of ponies from a V8 as well, but only for a few 1/4 miles. Take into consideration the cost to recover your mighty beast from the middle of the Simpson (ie add $10K+ to the cost of your chip) and reflect upon the cost/benefit equation. My Dtronic chip allegedly has the protection of the 1KZ ECU as well, but that didn't stop the overboost (my bad) from cracking the cylinder head almost instantly! Whatever you do, there will be a weakness engineered in there somewhere just waiting to bite those who push the boundaries.
Having said that I have always put reliability over all else, and I am getting too old to afford the time/$ to fix cars, so I have a one-eyed view. YMMV ;-P

I have had the unichip for 3months now. Fuel usage on the trip meter in my 2013 5 speed hilux is currently stable at 8.1 LPH where as prechip it was high 9s. I had a diesel smart Injector duration and boost type chip before and it slightly better on fuel but the difference is between is the two is night and day. I personally spent countless hours on the phone before my purchase.
