  • CAT Filter installed, water added!

If the title does not make any sense there is a reason for that.

I successfully installed CAT 144-9962 filter in the engine bay. As part of priming the filter and removing air, I attached a pipe to the factory outlet and them pumped till about 1 liter Diesel was out and the primer felt considerable resistance. Car started and test drive went well, the pack up started and that is where things went wrong. ops:

The one liter or so of the Diesel was poured into a glass bottle that had some condensed water along the walls that I did not notice before. So back went the Diesel into the tank and then I saw there were water bubbles at the bottom of the bottle floating below what ever Diesel was left in the bottle. How big a concern is that. I know any water is bad but what should be the next step. Is it a big deal to worry and take some action or would there be similar condensation in the fuel tank?

Any suggestions. Basically $1.50 worth of Diesel is the cause of all the anxiety now!

Not a big deal if it was only a few drops in the bottom of the filter. Run a diesel additive in a full tank of fuel to emulsify the water in your fuel tanks.

Lets see if that fuel filter works, why worry.

gxl_d4d and ####, thanks for the advice, the fuel was added back to the fuel tank. I did not pre-fill the filter at all. All fittings went on and then I just used the factory primer. I had read one member had issues with air leak once they pre-filled the filter before installing. So dry filted straight on and was filler as I pumped the primer on factory filter.

What additive do you recommend for the fuel emulsifying?

But on another note many thanks to all PP members and SME's this has been a great learning experience. Techstream is next, cable on its way!

So for anyone using Aeroequip FC598-06 SAE 100R6 fuel hose, that is one tough hose to put onto fittings. It has a very hard outer cover making bending it very hard. Once you were able to push it on to a hose end I am sure even with out a clip it there was no way any fuel could leak. It is a very tight fit. Not small in hose spec but due to the hard outer wall it is NOT easy to take off. It was bought from Speedflow along with their fittings. By the way lot of pipes that I see in pictures looks like they are exceeding the minimum bend radius, which in my case was 3 inch. So there is a longish bend from the CAT filter outlet to the factory filter inlet. I have not done this work before so was super careful.

        Thanks.
