Hi everyone.
I know I probably won’t get a science based answer on this, but I thought it could be an interesting discussion.
My owners manual recommends 0w20 for my 2021 prado and states that a higher viscosity may be beneficial if the engine is run in extreme load situations.
The only other oils specified in the book are 0w30 and 5w30.
I regularly tow a 2 ton van at the speed limit and sand 4x4 in some pretty soft areas. What’s peoples thoughts on getting a thicker oil put in at the 20k service or is 0w20 fine.
I live in Adelaide and our summers here are in the 40’s so a lot of my towing is in above 30 degree weather. Personally I’m leaning towards a 5w30 mainly because I’m old fashioned but the 0w20 actually has better sheer capabilities but obviously starts as a thinner oil.
Keen to hear opinions, especially if you have actual knowledge on the subject, not just “thicker is better”.
Cheers
