  • oil recommendation

Hi everyone, you guys have a great site. I'm over in the United States and own a 2011 Toyota 4Runner. I was curious if someone who owns a 2010 or 2011 Prado with the (1GR-FE) 4.0 V-6 petrol engine with the Dual VVT-i would be willing to post the 2 or 3 pages out of their owners manual that tells about the recommended engine oil and the recommended viscosities. Over here it's getting to be all about fuel economy and Toyota recommends 0W-20 for our 4Runners, but it says that under high speeds or extreme loads a higher viscosity oil may be better (but it doesn't say what viscosity). I'm just assuming that you guys are fortunate enough to be given a list in your owners manual of different viscosities of oil that are recommended according to the temperature. This is how it used to be here, but now they just keep dropping the recommended viscosity to try for better fuel economy. Since we have the exact same engine I figure this would a good way to find out what I can run in mine as I would like to use a higher viscosity than the 0W-20. I just want to make sure it is the specs from the models that have the Dual VVT-i (2010 or 2011 150 series, I think thats right) because I'm not sure if the oil requirements changed when they went to the Dual VVT-i (I doubt it, but I just want to be sure).

Sorry for the long post, but if someone could do this I would greatly appreciate it.

    Re: oil recommendation

As for the book specs i have that in front of me and depending on environment they allow from a 5w30 to a 20w50

Having worked for big oil i would look at a 10w40(my choice) as a good general weight product that should cover most of your driving

Thanks, I assume that yours is either a 2010 or 2011 with the 1GR-FE 4.0 V-6 petrol engine with the Dual VVT-i system, right? Here is an attachment that Toyota sent me but it is from a 2009 (they said that was the most recent manual they had access too :?: :?: ) I just wanted to make sure the oil recommendations stayed the same when they switched to the Dual VVT-i in 2010 because I'm not sure if oil pressure has anything to do with the operation of the Dual VVT-i system (which could be affected by oil viscosity). Does the chart in the 2010 and 2011 owners manual look the same as this one? Ok well I can't get the attachment on here, but it shows: 5W-30 below 50*F, 10w-30 above 0*F, 15w40 above 10*F, and 20w-50 above 20*F (API grade SL or SM for all of them). Like I said, this is from a 2009 manual, is 2010 and 2011 the same?

Thanks again LargeInAPrado, I agree, if the chart is the same I would say 10w-40 would be a good choice.

Thanks, and you didn't say, but I assume that your Prado is a 2010 or 2011 with the 1GR-FE 4.0 V-6 petrol engine with the Dual VVT-i system. I'm almost willing to bet that the oil recommendation (viscosity and the temperature range chart) didn't change, but I would like to know for sure, Just let me know and that would be great.

Thanks again for taking the time to help,

          Cory

nope its a 2010 d4d but the book is universal and the first page for oil spec is the 1GR-FE and the second the diesel... saves them having two owners manuals

              Re: oil recommendation

Hey, if you would, when you look to see if the chart is the same see if it says anything about meeting any GF-3, GF-4 or GF-5 specs or if it is just SM or SL.

Thanks again for the help, especially someone you don't even know that's several thousand miles away.
