I think it might have been a diesel but I will check with my mate. Also, I should have mentioned it but nobody was injured in the incident although the tow truck driver did mention that they were lucky that it didn't fry the battery as he believed it may have caused the system too shut down which could have locked all doors. His theory not mine but it is a scary thought. Who has a hammer in their car to smash out with?

[QUOTE=ntp;294659]Not saying this would've made any difference... But just wondering if anyone had a fire extinguisher?

Having been at the scene when a car caught on fire and having two fire extinguishers in our car I have to say they're not much use. Fires in cars seem to take hold very quickly and burn furiously. Well that's my experience.

If it was a diesel then one would assume that a fuel leak would have to have occurred in a spot over the exhaust manifold (or other extremely hot surface) for the fuel to combust right?

A catastrophic turbo failure, or maybe a common rail problem.
I would imagine with the fuel pressures they run in the common
rail system even a minute leak wouold spray diesel everywhere?

1 scenario: Damaged temp sensor on the top of radiator, allowing extreem overheating (for some reason) followed by electrical fire?
2 scenario: fast leak from radiator (hose has come off somewhere), so water drops below sensor and temp sensor doesnt register increase + its winter - keeping cool air flowing in. Fire begins due to melting electrics or spark from somewhere? (I've had this experience - smoke started billowing from under the bonnet and I assume may have led to a fire if I hadnt used the fire extinguisher I installed)

Wonder if it had one of the faulty ARB dual battery setups that have been recalled due to fires...!!!

                  Guys,

I wouldn't be to hard on the ARB battery isolator, I have yet to see any isolator on the
market that has internal fuse protection to protect the internal electronics should a
fault occur (vendors please correct me if I'm wrong). It is therefore possible that any
isolator could catch fire under the right circumstances. It's a pity that for an extra few
cents they don't provide internal protection of some sort.

                  Cheers

Always makes me laugh when nobody actually knows any facts yet we already have a whole heap of assumption and scenarios, just like this

Oooooops, did I say that

"After having dug to a depth of 10 feet last year, British scientists found traces of copper wire dating back 200 years and came to the conclusion that their ancestors already had a telephone network more than 150 years ago.

Not to be outdone by the British , in the weeks that followed, an American archaeologist dug to a depth of 20 feet, and shortly after, published a story in the New York Times: "American archaeologists, finding traces of 250-year-old copper wire, have concluded that their ancestors already had an advanced high-tech communications network 50 years earlier than the British".

One week later, Australia 's Northern Territory Times , reported the following: "After digging as deep as 30 feet in his backyard in Tennant Creek , Northern Territory , Billi Bunji, a self-taught archaeologist, reported that he found absolutely bugger-all. Billi has therefore concluded that 250 years ago, Australia had already gone wireless."

Sorry, just my sense of humour getting the best of me!

Me. One of those plastic little hammers with sharp steel conic head specifically designed to brake car windows, cheap and very much useful the day you'll need it. Recommended.

                            Cheers

We all actually have quite a number of "hammers" handy - pull out a head rest and use metal posts to break a window! (Thanks Bear Grylls)

I also have a hammer clipped on cargo barrier but reckon the head rest will be the go if the situation ever arises.
