  • What will happen if...

I havent tested this but... if I start the car (to warm it up etc) and I go back inside the house to grab something, and someone jumps in and drives off in the car, will it cutout due to the car key being with me? If so, how far would they get before it cuts out?

I got 400 meters up the road from home when I remembered I had left the key behind, I turned around at that point so I'm not sure how far you could go.

There was no audible warning inside the car but there was a yellow warning triangle light on the dash.

I don't know how far you could drive away, but you could certainly drive it away. I would imagine it could keep going until the engine was turned off. When I leave mine to warm up whilst towing the van, either the missus or myself remain nearby. When having one of those around-the-caravan-park chats with other people, someone told me he saw a bloke warming his engine and walk a short distance away, only to see another bloke hop in and drive away with the vehicle and van. As a side issue, for those with caravans and camper trailers parked in caravan parks, some crooks have been backing up to the vans, hooking up and driving away. Some sort of security device is needed to stop this happening.

Have accidentally kept the keys with me and the wife driven home 20km to find she doesn't have the keys to get in the house. There was the yellow triangle up. So I think it reasonable to conclude that once started it can go till it runs out of fuel or is turned off the only consolation is they can't start it again which isn't much of a consolation.

Slightly OT but is it OK to warm up the 150 before driving. It was the done thing years ago but most modern engines don’t require warm up and most manufacturers advise you not to do it in their manual.

I changed my mind and removed my post. Curious why? Look there: http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...upgrade-in-GXL

mm i remember in the old m5's you were meant to drive them to warm them up, as if you sit there the engine warms up but the gearbox oil stays nice and cold....

I had this experience on the GXL. I took the car keys and walked into the house so that my wife can put the car in the garage. No movement, car lost power with the key just 5mts away from the car.

Ours will beep inside the car and outside the car as soon as the keys are taken outside of the cabin. Can still drive it though.

Thats good to know - I assumed that it would cut out after a certain distance or time away from the remote which clearly it doesn't.

On the warm up side, I think it's always good to warm the engine for a small period of time (around 30 seconds to a minute in winter) before heading off and not flooring it until the car is at full temperature.
I guess this comes from the days when I was forced to warm up the motor before heading off when the engine had a carby mounted to it

My kakadu beeps inside and out and comes up with a warning in the centre display saying key not detected if you take the keys away fromt he car, its only a month old so maybe there was an update?

The yellow triangle lights up as well.
