Ah yes, i remember when the 'SPECIAL' edition 120 series (if I recall is what called Kakadu or jabiru) came out in late 2006. Getting rid of all the stuff off the shelves to make room for the new series 120 and then from there the 150. If you note, the 'ALTITUDE' is almost a VX without the additional drive train goodies. As i said, getting rid of all the stuff that dosen't sell that well.
Sales of the GXL outstrip the VX hands down.

I wouldn't be surprised if 150 v6 is close by or an updated front end or even a 8 speed auto mated to that 152kw 3.7 V6 diesel.

If your looking for a cheaper 'ALTITUDE' there is a dealer in Brisbane that was selling a brand new one three weeks ago for $69,990.00 drive away. Problem was he would only give me $40,000.00 for my SEP/2010 Black GXL 150 wih 32,000 km on the clock.

For a crappy looking badge, leather upgrade and sat nav, keep the GXL. Yep they are nice but not that nice.

                • The Altitude Story – quite long – my apologies
Thought I would give a little update to our Altitude adventure so far.
Hubby’s car lease is to run out in a few months’ time and we decided this year to purchase something a little bigger than the Toyota Aurion we are currently driving. It’s not that we are 4WD’ers – far from it, but you do feel more secure when you are sitting higher up from the road and where there is also a Bullbar on the front. Now that we are empty nesters, we have found our kids have moved interstate so we are doing many kilometres through East Gippsland, Cooma, Canberra etc on the way to northern NSW and Brisbane. With so many winding roads and the Aussie wildlife –that is the main reason we chose to get something else.
I actually had my heart set on the Kluger Grande and a few months ago when we were at the dealer, one of the salesmen showed hubby the Altitude, I took no notice as the Grande was parked beside it and I was busy imagining myself sitting in that.
So a few weeks ago hubby breaks the news to me that he wants a Prado!!! I thought this would take a bit of work to talk him out of it but to my amazement – he stuck to his guns. I started looking online and checking this new car out. Deciding if we had to get the Prado – I wanted the Altitude. Imagine my surprise when all of a sudden, no-one had them. We were not able to buy the VX as the company has a policy that you are not able to go over the LCT limit so that was out and I wasn’t fussed on the GXL. Finally found one on carsales and last Thursday off we trekked in the rain, hail and 6 degree temperature. I thought I might have had hubby talked into a Jeep so arranged to look at one of those as well. The dealer with the Altitude let hubby take it for a drive – well that was it, done and dusted. He fell in love and worse still – kept telling the dealer that!!!
Now over the years, we have our version of good cop, bad cop – with hubby always Mr Nice and me – yep, Mrs Nasty. I’m the negotiator. But it doesn’t help at all when the other half keeps saying how great it is. We barter about and then the dealer says he is not even sure he can find another for us as the one we drove is supposedly someone elses.
Back to Jeep or Kluger me thinks – but no Prado or bust. We go back to our local dealer the next day and they are actually able to find one in Melbourne for us that they are in the process of getting in.
Saturday we were off to the airport to pick up our son who has flown down for the weekend and when his plane is delayed, hubby suggests we go to the dealer where the Altitude is being sent from to have a look at it as we had not seen the White colour at all. Sorry Chrystal Pearl!!
At the dealer there were 3 Prados lined up side by side, GXL, our Altitude and the VX. It was good to see it and like it and we also had a hard time figuring out what the difference between the VX and the Altitude was until we got the brochure. Hubby more than happy with his machine so much so that when another couple came over to look, he basically stood guard and would not let them near it. Luckily they were more interested in the GXL and didn’t go to near his Altitude.
On the way home from the airport, son suggests when we drive up for his wedding later this year, we should take the Altitude driving on the sand on Fraser Island. Hubby almost turns purple and says no way is he getting sand in it!!!
We actually have had 4WD’s before but the only 4WDing we have done is getting off the muddy grass at a football oval years ago when the kids were little. While I prefer exec lounges in 5 star hotels to camping and rough roads, I have a funny feeling that hubby is imaging himself as a grey nomad in a few years.
Looks like I might have some more things to get used to.
Anyway our Altitude should be able to be picked up later this week as we are away for a while so I might actually get to drive it and see what all the fuss is about.
The last thing I wanted to mention is that while I was googling what is the sat nav like , I came across this website and nearly fell out of my chair when I read 42 pages all about just the Altitude.
One of the guys who hubby works with has told him that we have now gone up in stature by becoming Prado owners and now belong to a very special club!!!
Thanks for reading – please don’t be too tough on me 

                    • Question for others with an altitude, if you have run power to the rear from your dual battery set up, where have you fitted a rear fuse box? I'm guessing this would be the same for the VX and Kakadu, but where I was going to run power to in a GXL, there's a sub woofer in the way. ( I was getting a GXL but managed to grab last of the altitudes in Perth) I'd rather not see it, I like having it concealed away.

There's some room next to the jack in that little compartment, but Id rather keep that free, just I case I need to get the jack out.

I don't want to fit it in the rear door, due to that being the most likely place to be damaged in a car crash- being rear ended- plus the cost of extra cable needed to get all the way there.

                      Any thoughts appreciated
                      Geoff

                      • After removing the rear seats and also the side panel next to the panel you speak of where the jack is situated, you will find there is enough space to mount a fuse block in behind it, then you can have additional power sockets run off that through the side panel....

                        Just a thought

Sorry, a bit confused, Is there a panel lower down, that I can access after removing the seats, or do you mean the whole quarter panel?

                          • Geoff,

You will need to removed the whole quarter panel, and you will find ample rrom behind the panel to fit a fusebox, then be able to run additional plugs into the quarter panel. I wish I had taken some photos last week when I had the quarter panel out, but was rushing to run all wiring during one day. It will all need to come out again in a few weeks when the drawer system goes in though.....

I thought that was what you meant, made me look twice tho to make sure I hadn't missed something!

I'm thinking that's what I'll have to do, as i cant find another spot. Just hope I don't need to replace a fuse to often!

By the way, did you need to move the power steering reservoir to fit the second battery? Mine is the V6 as opposed to your Diesel so it may not be in the way.
                              Geoff
