  • Breathers - how many does an auto diesel have??

I have a diesel auto 150 series and am going to fit breathers. This may have been covered before but cant seem to find much on it.

I realise each diff has one, however, does the auto gearbox and transfer have breathers?? I think the auto box is a sealed non serviceable unit so would not think it has, correct?? What about the transfer??

Five in total. Diff x 2 and gear and transfer by three.

Don't forget to extend you fuel tank breather.

The auto is also serviceable, and should be serviced regardless of what Toyota say.

There's plenty on both topics, breather and auto servicing - just search using google eg, "diff breathers Prado point". That should find you everything you need to know.

^+1 If you believe Toyota and don't service your auto box it will last about 5 minutes after your warranty expires.
The auto specialists i was talking to the other day about my trans oil cooler said to service the box about every 40,000. Or more often if to tow heaps.
Plus they recomended an oil cooler on the 150's for a better box life.

        Cheers

Wow, I had no idea there were that many!

If I am not planning any serious water crossings yet, but do head to Fraser Island every year. Will the diffs suffice, or should I still be doing the gearbox, transfer and fuel tank breathers??

I was advised by TJM that unless you are doing serious deep water crossings often, then just the diff breathers will be fine.

            So thats what I did

            Cheers,

            Jeff

Oh good. I don't do any offroading where I am in deep water, just the odd shallow crossing and beach runs so sounds like I will be able to get away with just the diffs. Thanks.

Does the front breather come up into the engine bay already like the 90's and the 120's passengers side inner guard ???. Not sure if they do or not but will make it a bit quicker for you Sandrunner if it does, just need to extend it upto the rear of the fire wall then save you getting under front of vehicle it is does already come up to the inner guard........Cheers Steve

The front Breather does come up into the engine bay, but it could do with extending.

I'm pretty sure the transfer and gearbox breathers are the one's at the back of the head, above the bell housing.

I have standard breathers, I have also done many, including some deep crossings (not silly float away deep of corse)
I have never had water in my oils.
I have only ever seen some water in prado rear diffs, they are still going strong with an oil change.
The rear diff breather is the one that is the lowest. still 400mm.....ish
The 1 thing you dont want a drop of water in is your auto!!!!!

So if your going deeper than say 4-500mm do the auto! and the rear diff if you like.....

I would recommend doing them all if your taking the time to do 1 do 5 of them
                          Front diff
                          Rear diff
2x automatic gearbox ( located on the bell housing behind the head)
                          Fuel tank

I went through a water crossing about 3/4 up wheels and got water in both diffs. I extended the rear up to the engine bay but left the front and gearbox/transfer as I felt they were probably high enough. Easy job, cheap insurance.

If you have a Grande there is a breather (air intake) for the airbags too.
