  • UHF radio in kakadu 150

Hi guys, according to the official Toyota Prado off road driving manual it states that installing a mobile two way radio may affect electronic systems such as multi-port fuel injection systems, cruise control, anti lock braking,SRS airbags and seat belt tensioners, please check with Toyota dealer for precautionary measures.
So what's the deal, can we or cant we install UHF radio in a Prado without the vehicle bursting into a huge mushroom cloud ?

Or is it just BS just like not using a mobile phone on a modern aircraft.
I thought all modern electrical systems have adequate shielding to prevent such interference.

    Thoughts please

    Cheers
    Steve

This is the first I've heard of it, Is it in a manual?

Anyway, I would think that its all BS. At a guess I would say that most people that use their Prado's off road use a UHF with out any issue with the vehicle.

    Cheers,

    Jeff

Yes, it's on pg 10 of the Off-road Driving Owner's Manual. Funny thing is my UHF is installed somewhere under the center console where as I understand it there's a fair bit of electronic gear and the guys at my local dealership have never said anything about that.

UHF should be fine. However high powered devices such as HF can and do effect electrical systems and there's been a number of reports in all makes and models about this.
Hence it's always suggested to install HF's as far away from these systems: like in the boot.

              Yup,

I've got the GME TX3540 installed in my VX, and haven't had any issues so far. I did read the warning, but (naively or otherwise) left it in the hands of the installers.

P.S. Haven't tested out the Aribags yet... and hoping not to have to!

We don't have a problem with our handheld UHF but the incar camera we installed sometimes sets off a warning beep and says 'key not detected' if you shut the door hard. Dealer says the camera is interfering with the electronics.

Have a windscreen mount videocam. But my handheld UHF set is interfering with it.
It is that powerful. Hopefully don't affect the car electronics.

Anyway, contacted Toyota dealerships and they do install UHF sets.

On the subject of radio installations can anyone point me in the direction of a thread on removing the center console (as in the bit around the shifter)? I've tried searching but can only find ones on removing the bit around the radio and gps/DVD unit. I think my Icom is hiding under there and want to check as it was in the Kaka when I bought it.

I bought the GME 3540 and mounted the base unit on top of the glove box "casing" where that stupid little business card holder thing is. Just grind of a little of the plastic moulding bits and it fits perfect, then fit the remote socket for the mic down near the drivers left leg and screw the mic bracket to the dash just to the right of the satnav screen. works a treat and you can jst unplug it ane put the mike away when not in use. Buy a cheap remote speaker and screw it to the top of the left foot foot rest. its out of the way and you can hear it perfectly
