  • 150 lift requirements for Queensland

    Hi all,

I am looking at lifting my 150 gxl prado up t30mm and adding some new tyres at the same time(265-70-17) from standard (265-65-17), this should give me a total lift of approx 55mm with the increase in tyre size. Under the new modification requirement for Queensland VSB14 code of practice a lift not exceeding 75mm including 25mm increase in tyre height is legal for vehicles without ESC (electronic stability control). As 150 series comes standard with VSC (vehicle stability control) same as Esc, I have had a read through this section of the code and section LS version 2-2.6 states the following:

"For modification codes contained in this Section of VSB 14, evidence should be obtained either
from the vehicle manufacturer or through testing to determine the impact on the ESC system.
To remain within the scope of this Section of VSB 14, a vehicle fitted with ESC must not be
modified if the operation of the ESC is affected unless the ESC system is adjusted accordingly"

Has any one had any experience with this, and be able to comply?

    cheers Chris

Good question. Deserves a good answer. The mud tyres I found have a bigger OD than legal in NSW (i.e. 265/60-18 = OD 776mm +15mm= 790mm), hence we have to have it engineered.

The new rules are tough for ESC vehicles no doubt. I believe ARB and TJM have done the necessary testing and can offer compliant suspension systems. However that doesn't take into account the change in tyre size. You need to have a talk with the various suppliers and ask the questions. There is no longer a blanket +15 on diameter as you have found. When I did my mods I was able to work to the previous legislation.

If legally it is hard to increase the tyre size then don't do it. I swap between 65 profile (standard) and 70 profile 12mm taller often. It changes the gearing enough that 5th becomes too tall much quicker than with the standard tyres. Great in the bush but not as nice on the road as standard size.

Cheers for the input guys, I am going into ARB tomorrow to ask the question about there lift kits being compliant with the VSB14 modification rules regarding modifications to vehicles with ESC, somehow i think i might be greeted with a blank face as these new rules came out after these products were developed (late 2012). If all else fails a phone call to department of transport with a carton of beer wile i wait might be in order!

If you get no where locally call the head offices.

I doubt you'll have any trouble. ARB at coopers plains were all over it when I got mine nearly a year ago. I'd be surprised if any ARB dealer couldn't answer. Email to head office will probably work too though. I did because I wanted it in writing which I got just for the lift question I had so they'll probably respond to you lift and tyres query as well.
