  • Spares for Simpson Desert trip

    Hi All,

Did a search but with one bar of 3g it gets difficult to scroll through all the threads, couldn't find much anyway.

Doing a full simpson desert crossing over easter, this is my 3rd big Outback trip now with the Prado in 12 months of owning it and loving it! I have that special tape stuff, electrical bits and pieces, tools etc - however no engine spares/parts yet and I wanted to focus the feedback more around these things as I feel confident with everything else. I never bothered when it had lower kms but now she is getting on a bit approaching 90,000kms I am thinking it's probably a good idea to be sensible about it.

What would you all recommend? I don't want to go over the top and i'm getting a full service and check over done before I head. I was thinking, radiator hoses (or will tape be sufficient?), air filter, not sure about fuel filters... is anything else really necessary?

Anyone had any experiences they wish to share?

    thanks!
    Matt

    spares

    hey
What I now carry are 1 new air filter 1 new air con filter and the old hoses that I get replaced on the service prior to leaving (unless they are totally RS). If you have a water watch/fuel watch system no fuel fi;ters but a couple of those small fuel filters (I have 1 in my kit but have never used it)

Thanks for the first hand feedback m. I am getting water watch installed next week
I never thought of keeping my old hoses from a service! Great idea if they're okay.

These vehicles are great, you should not need to worry about carrying much in the way of spares.
Pre trip check, tighten & lock tite nuts & bolts of aftermarket accessories like Bullbar bolts.
Plenty of water, & spare tyre, but as long as you drop pressures odds are you will be ok.
It always seems to be aftermarket extras are the culprits.

90,000klms is nothing! It's barely run in.

        Enjoy the drive.

If you are getting a service done I recommend having someone aware of a desert crossing trip be doing it, I think they look at more aspects then just under the hood, at least that is what I do.

I would also suggest that you have a post trip inspection done depending on the terrain and difficulty in case something needs replacing post trip

Okay great - thanks for the tips guys!

I will have 2 x spare wheels by the time i leave and about 60L of water pressures I am confident with now days, I went there last year had a blast just thought maybe with the kms getting up there i may need a few critical spares. I am use to the quality of a hodlen commodore

Belts, belts, belts. Apart from hoses, these are about the only thing likely to fail that you could consider carrying. And with hoses, some good duct tape will repair any hose. The only thing I have seen die on any of the trips we have done across the Simpson or in desert areas were belts.

Thanks Michael - good idea. I should have learnt from last time I did part of the simpson however it was a Jeep. Had to tow him to birdsville wasn't fun.

Something with which to plug up a holed radiator, good tyre pump, engine oil etc but a lot of that stuff can be shared across a group.
