  • Aux fuel tank 2014 question

Ok, maybe another silly question, I have only had it for a week, so this may not be my last.
So I got down to 50km left on the DTE and filled her up and it took 103ltrs of diesel. Where did the other 50ltrs go. Is there another fill point in the car or is it one tank and the DTE is that far out. I read on car sales and they say Aux tank.
Can someone please help with this question. I have tried the search function and haven't really been able to find me the answer.

    Thanks

Maybe it wasn't full to begin with?

I did pick it up and filled it up.
So I take it is one big tank and there is not a second tank.

I will have to see what happens over the next couple of fills

Makes no difference. DTE (Distance to Empty) is calculated from what the car things remains in the tanks. If you fill 103L, that means there was about 47L still in the tanks at the time it was filled.

So the car calculates that those last 50km will eat 45 odd litres of fuel. Clearly can't be right.

There are 2 tanks in the 150, and unlike the 120 gauge, the 150's simply transfer the fuel automatically between the tanks, and show it on the gauge as if it was 1 big tank.
Empty on the gauge in theory is both tanks empty, full on the gauge likewise. I have seen a few posts where people have reported having quite alot of fuel apparently remaining when the DTE shows a small number of km.

It is 2 separate tanks but if you think of it as one big one then you wont confuse yourself, as that's effectively the way they work.

Maybe your trip computer has to learn some history as you said you have only had it a week. Scangauge is similar in that it takes a few fills to get accurate.

              Hello R2D2,

The DTE means very little and cannot be relied on for a true reading. I trust the low fuel light which comes on with 22 litres to go. Mine seems quite accurate and the tank takes about 130 litres if I fill it shortly after the light appears. The DTE will get better if you run the tanks lower and refill with larger fuel fills.

Just because a computer says its true does not make it so.

              regards

              Ross

Although I have only filled mine 3 times just after the light goes on, it seems to have around 30L left going by what I put in. I don't use DTE.

It is the same in the pre-facelift 150s r2d2. The most I have ever been able to get in is 132L. I think there is a large reserve and the actually usable fuel total is considerably less than 150L.
Have a search there is a few threads on it.

Thanks all. The fuel light was on and I thought well I must be near empty. At least I know it is only one fill point and there isn't a secret one hiding somewhere. I will give another 5000kms and see what changes. Thanks all for your input to my silly questions.

I did come from a Subaru STI and have not regrets and really enjoying the ride in the Prado.

Plus I am learning a lot for this forum, thanks all again for your input.

I have never been able to get the maximum capacity in any car i have owned. Even after running a couple of petrol cars dry deliberately to check capacity and accuracy of the gauge.

Apparently Mr Toyo would like you to keep at least thirty litres in the tank for whatever reason. My fuel light comes on at around 20 litres left and given that this is still a reserve of around 180 to 200km, sounds reasonable. I have had the scangauge showing 6.0l left and then put 144 litres into it so the capacity is there as long as you are patient enough when filling it to get the last six to ten litres in as the foam settles.

In my diesel 150, I find frothing a big issue that makes it very difficult to completely fill the tanks without standing at the bowser and waiting 5 minutes for the froth the die down, then slowly trickling fuel in until it's full. Lucky I don't have to fill it up very often...

A mate with a diesel 120 said he doesn't suffer this problem as bad as I do so it's probably something to do the with shape of the tanks/filler neck.

The 150 has a Y splitter in the filler pipe . The rear tank appears to be lower than the main tank so I reckon that it fills first . If you listen while filling you can hear a difference in the sound , I reckon that's when the rear's full and it then starts filling the front tank . The only time I've put 150 lts in was after the tanks were drained then removed and the water cleaned out of them .
                            Cheers Ross
