  • 2014 GX First Impressions

I took delivery of a new 2014 GX Manual about a month ago. I have previously been driving a 2002 90 series TX since new (which will be for sale ASAP) and also have a WRX as a daily drive. I thought I would start a post on first impressions of the 150, and a few comments on the upgrades I have done/will do. I will eventually start a thread in the Rig Build.

I chose a GX because I wanted 5 seats not 7, a manual, and minimal excess stuff that adds weight. There are two major things that have stood out for me in comparison with my 90 series - performance and space. The performance is a significant step up, even with a DPChip in the 90 series. The interior space is less impressive, primarily in the cargo area which is about 20cm shorter than the 90 series. It is hard to tell where that space has gone - perhaps a bit more leg room for 2nd row seats. I know the lost volume is going to annoy me for a long time.

The 6-speed manual seems like a good thing and will surely contribute to good economy. The 150 is good for about 10km/hr faster in the lower gears compared with the 90.

Modifications to the 150 are as follows, with much of the work done by TJM:

    ECB Alloy Bar (black)
    Toyota towbar
    Lightforce driving lights
    Brown Davis Bash Plates
Piranha DBS 180 (with AOC) dual battery system - chose this so I can run a solar panel
Extra power outlets in cabin and cargo area
Projecta inverter (300W) mounted to drawers (behind seats)
    Airtec snorkel
    TJM side steps
    Diff breathers
    Rhino platform rack
Icom UHF. Clic On mount works well for the handset
    Supertrim neoprene seat covers
    Sandgrabba mats front and rear
Drifta drawers (with table) + cargo barrier (minor mods required to complete the installation)
Kings and Koni susupension (see thread in Suspension)

    Still to do
    - Install my Barrett HF from the 90 series
    - Compressor in engine bay (probably ARB in case I install a locker)
    - Water trap on fuel system
    - Upgrade interior lighting to LED
    - Go 4wding!!!

Hi Ian, I note you have TJM side steps fitted. Yours is a diesel right? Did they have any issues fitting them? I'm curious because PP member Ex-Niss was told they wouldn't fit, something to do with the body mounts being a different height to the pre-facelift models.

Love the GX , sounds like you have got a good set up under way. What shade of White did it come in?

Fido666 - Yes it is a diesel and TJM did not mention any problems fitting them. I got the TJM steel side steps, not the alloy ones.
Rags- the brochure says it is Glacier White. For me it is just white.

Here Here, I was told that the manual (only available now in GX, GXL and D4D only) only accounts for about 7% of sales nationally, and I am guessing that figure is largely made up of the GX mining fleets. Pretty hard to come by even new in GXL.

                [QUOTE=chappy;469838]Welcome to the GX clan.

X2 - money better spent elsewhere. That said I prefer manual heating controls, smaller wheel arches, my steps and roof bars, I would probably have got the GX if it was the same price as the GXL

Had my GX since Feb-14 to get 2014 build, white, Auto. Fitted,
                  - TJM bar, steel side steps, under-body and snorkel. No issues
                  - Cargo barrier fitted myself, modified bottom bracket instead of useless standard fit into interior trim, now on tie down point.
                  - Used Sidewinder kit for dual battery swapped main/aux sides which allows Optima D27F aux with D34 main. Also fitted rear power board. Diode for alternator, Great kit!
                  - Old Ironman 220 halogens (ex son) with 22" LED bar. LED worklight on rear of flat rack, switched from cabin
                  - Heap of wiring, extra USB power front and rear, extra cig power points, in cabin, rear and engine bay through new fuse board
                  - used the Aironboard (Ebay) switches extensively to keep interior tidy. All wired up with lights showing. Centre console blanks need trimming in holder area, rest straight fit.
                  - Have Ipad with Hema maps on RAM mount, hence extra USBs as the one is useless to charge Ipad whilst running. Supported by Garmin Glo satellite unit to enhance the Ipad capability
                  - fitted Hayman Reece bar with genuine harness bought off Ebay which was my first job. Relatively easy, care needed removing rear bumper
                  - Icom 440N fitted inside sleeve of centre console so hidden with just head unit plugged in outside. Now have trick on centre console removal!
                  - At <100kms fitted Gecko black steel wheels and BFG A/T. Now 8500kms and very pleased
                  - All above dropped front by 15mm so today having King Springs and Bilsteins fitted supported by Polyairs in rear. 2" lift, heavy front, normal rear as I don't want a cart when driving normal-unloaded. Be interesting to see how it goes.
                  - Modified compressor on mount and will fit under passenger seat this weekend. Bought some bits from Enzed to extend pipe to LHS seat slide where I plug hose in. Switch on dash
                  - Oh as an aside have fitted Blackvue WiFi HD camera to front screen to record my daily progress with all these idiots on the freeway. Sensational insurance/value. Will also use on excursions of course.
Phew, it has been a lot of fun for an old fella to get the tools out again and enjoy his shed!
Target now, Simpson Desert etc late July with son in his FJ Cruiser and several old mates.

Confused , I am sure Toyota would sell you one for the same price as a GXL if you asked!

I'm sure they would have, my local dealer wanted me to. Instead I saved six grand from their price and spent it at ARB.

yeah it wasn't easy ordering new and having delivery in the colour i was after in anything less than 3months - for a toyota puuleehhzze! so my dealer ended up horse trading a graphite gxl manual that was already delivered to another dealer about 700kms away.

there are some good smart or dual clutch autos around these day but i don't understand why so many people order autos on new cars. kind of suggests they don't give a f#ck about driving!

Some of us live in the burbs where driving a manual is a PITA. I had a manual 80 series for about 3 years, drove it 35KMs each way to and from the city each day and it drove me nuts.

Seems a shame to me to wreck such a beautifully smooth car as a Prado with a manual transmission

Learn to drive a manual and it is also a beautifully smooth car, with an extra gear and less shit to go wrong.
