  • 150 Diff oils

The 150 Prado uses Toyota Synthetic LT 75W-85 GL-5 oil in the diffs.
My local dealers don't carry it in retail quantities only what the use themselves.
From what I gather it is a fully synthetic gear oil.
I asked the guys at Penrite and was told officially they didn't have a substitute but had heard some dealers were using something other than the Toyota product.
Penrite 75W-85 is GL4 Plus rated not GL5, does anyone know the difference or can recommend a substitute for genuine Toyota?

Since posting this yesterday I have done more searching.
American Toyota forums covering the same oil in Prado, Hilux, FJ Cruiser recommend going up to 75W-90 GL-5 especially when towing or extreme 4wd use.
Several noticed material on the magnetic sump plug using Toyotas recommended grade but ceased when using 75W-90.
I think I have answered my own question hope info useful to others out there.

I use SAE90 GL-5. I believe the oil Toyota specifies for the 150 is to keep fuel economy down, but as you say, Toyota don't really stock it and there is no aftermarket equivalent.

Penrite do this: GEAR OIL 80W-90
Gear Oil 80W-90 is a premium heavy duty, mineral, extreme pressure SAE 80W-90 automotive gear oil meeting the requirements of API GL-5/6 and MT-1, as well as many other manufacturer specifications. It can also be used where SAE 90 and 85W-90 oils are recommended. It is designed for use in differentials, both hypoid and limited slip, manual gearboxes, transfer cases and transaxles in passenger cars, light commercials, 4WDs, trucks, construction, earthmoving and agricultural equipment.

If you can find it, I've never seen it on the shelf.

      Cheers Brad.
