Engine Compression braking going down steep hill

Hi I was travelling down the clyde mountain from Canberra to Batesman Bay yesterday and when I took my foot off the accelerator to coast down a hill (all be it a fairly steep hill) what I assume is the engine compression brake came on and the rev's jumped from just above 2000 to about 3000 and when I went to accelerate up the incline it seemed to take a bit longer to drop back down in rev's. All seems to be fine in general driving only seemed to be an issue going up and down the mountain.

Is this normal?

Engine Compression braking going down steep hill

No, it's just the grade logic in the auto shifting back a gear or two, it will do it of your to bake down hill as well, the steeper the hill the more gears it will shift, typically up to two. It will also do it in cruise control so you don't overrun your set speed.

It's not exhaust brakes!

I going down the Clyde today. This is the third time I have done it and will experience exactly what you did MJS. Quite normal and expected.

Lots of modern vehicles do this, I have experienced it in the new Rav4 and Kluger (both hire cars)coming down the hill on the Dampier highway

This is good to know as we have just purchased a 150 and it was one of the first things i noticed and wasn't sure if it was normal thanks!!

The 120 petrol uses the same Aisin 5 speed as the d4d and pajero.
