  • Faulty Front Parking Sensors

Hi, I have a 2014 GXL D4D, delivered late October 2014, with optional front parking sensors fitted.
The front parking sensors have been faulty from the first time I drove the car- the sensor goes off as if Im about to hit something (straight into the solid alarm tone, no intermittent beeps) even when there is nothing at all in front of the car.
I've had to turn them off as they go off constantly, and are therefore useless. I use the car for work and spend a lot of time in pokey hospital car parks with tight parking.

Ive reported it back to the dealership who have said its a known issue without a current fix. No timeline on a fix either.
Although not standard on the GXLs, Ive seen front parking sensors on the Kakadu and maybe Altitude (?). Anyone having issues with these sorts of sensors- either optional on the GXL, or the standard new on the Kakadu/Altitude?
If you did or currently have this issues, has the dealership been at all helpful? It took mine six goes to find that yes, there was a fault (even though its a known issue) and now I don't trust that they know what they're doing.

don't accept "its a known issue"... sounds like a whole lot of bulldust. Take it back to the dealership and have them replace the front parking sensors - problem solved. If they don't play ball, contact Toyo customer service and lodge a complaint.

Are the Sensors fitted into a bullbar?

Good Question RanJ. If yes, they may have been damaged in the removal/install or the over priced after-market sensor may have not been installed correctly with the bull-bar kit.. I believe its some form of insulation that goes around the sensor housing OR it could be paint if colour coded.

If its a paint issue you should be able to adjust/calibrate the gain on the unit

The front park assist that comes on the kaka, VX and the pre 2014 (the car with the wheel on the tailgate) altitude are all factory setups. The one you have will be an after-market unit which has an external little screen etc from motor1 and the likes.

The aftermarket chick tried to sell me this unit for $800 when I bought my car.... I just laughed at her just like I did with the tint & paint protection. I ended up getting a Toyota Genuine kit for $280 which has the genuine switch and integrates with my electrical loom and bulbar etc. Only problem is I have to install it myself which is not a big deal.

I would get the Dealer to calibrate the sensor to start off, then go from there.

Well the other problem that occurs in bullbars is that the hole can sometimes be too tight. A thumb press from behind is all that's required to get them out. Anymore and it's too tight and needs to be reamed out.

I have a 09 Kakadu with factory sensors that are fitted to a TJM T13 bar and the factory rear bumper. For the most part they are trouble free, I only have a problem with one of the front ones that goes off when rain or water from river crossings gets in it.

Same here Fido, the Prados factory sensors on the front are almost issue free, except in seriously heavy rain - then you cannot shut them up. Happens maybe 1 or 2 times a year.

Our new RAV4 with factory Toyota but dealer fitted front sensors, a bee could pee 10 meters away from them and it would pick that up, terrible!

                Thanks everyone for your replies.
The sensors are after-market, and fitted straight into the body, car is without bull bar at this stage. I got the sensors thrown in with the purchase price.
The dealership and Toyota Australia are both pushing the issue around between them, neither taking responsibility for it. They have both been useless to be honest. Dealership has replaced entire system already, issue has not been solved.
I think I probably have the same sensors as on Rogerthatv2's RAV4, would be interested in what your dealership says about those sensors!

Sounds like you might have a genuine part if the dealership is going through Toyota Aust. About the issue.

Usually if it was after market like the motor1 brand the dealership will deal with the issue as it would have been fittedby their Pre-Del shop.

do you have a screen of some sort or a switch that just doesn't look factory?

Hi evltoy, the switch is a duplicate of the rear parking sensor, like this one:
                    http://www.hodgsons-newcastle-shop.c..._w450_h400.jpg

The sensors don't interface with the touchscreen- so there is no indicator to show visually which sensor is going off, just the beeping.
When the dealership was looking into it (before they washed their hands of the matter) they would move the front sensor around. Started out in the centre console cluster, got moved to the other side of the console, and is now under the left hand side of the steering wheel.

                      Hey jaykay

I have the control box for your front parking sensor. If you are near by we can try swap out the box and see what happens.

As I have full fitting kit, it will take 15mins to remove trim & swap.

let me know if your interested.

Jaykay i have exactly the same problems with mine, i leave mine turned off, they are so annoying even when driving at 100km/h they will randomly beep. My dealer said they were 'Dirty' and just needed to be cleaned, a load of crok, made no difference.
