  • Traction control

I have a Prado 150 GX manual TD.

I was under the assumption that when in low range, the traction control was de-activated automatically.

There has been a few times now when I have been 4wding, say in mud, where it felt as if the traction control has activated and come into affect... on the weekend I was doing a river crossing and it kind of felt the same as well. it kind of felt like the power was being sucked away. each time I planted my foot on the accelerator and all was ok.

    Anyone have any ideas?

Traction control applies the brakes to individual wheels that slip. Vehicle Stability Control reduces engine power. You can turn VSC off. http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...l=1#post296133

It does not deactivate. It can be of great assistance. You can switch it off, like in sand it can get you bogged.

        In Summary:

Low range engaged - VSC off.
Press the TC/VSC Button once and TC turns off.
Press and Hold TC/VSC button and both turn off.

Trying to think of a situation where you would want TC off but VSC on and I can't think of one but I can think of plenty of situations where you would want the TC on but want the VSC off as the VSC will reduce your throttle where as if I understand it correctly the TC only controls spinning wheels with no reduction in power

              Traction control

              Yes.

But with the diff locked and at slow speeds it doesn't interfere much. Of course you can turn TC off first and VSC off second. Not the other way round.

why would you turn TC off at low range though?? VSC you dont' want them in low range but I don't see how you can benefit anything with TC turned off.

Thanks for that... it might be the VSC that im confusing it with. the power was defiantly taken away from the car. I had to burry my foot into the throttle to get some action going. i'll read the manual tonight and practice turning the VSC off on the weekend.

I turned mine off once, and locked the diff once on the beach to get through some boggy stuff that most where getting stuck in. Glad I did as the car in front bogged and I had to change tracks in 2nd, just sank the boot and she tore it up and made it through dragging her IFS all the way. If I had left VSC and TC on and had the diff unlocked like I usually do on the beach I would have been reversing out and trying again.

The traction control does take your power away and brake the faster moving wheels. Disengaging it does not turn it off completely, it stops it from robbing you of power but it still stops the wheels from spinning. So in tricky situations and particularly on sand, turn the TC Off.

When I experimented, I found the following:

H4, TC on VSC on, power removed, wheels braked
L4 TC on VSC off (this called A-TRAC) full power and brakes spinning wheel

All off, wheel spin city, great for mud and sand.

Since we dont have front lockers and most of us dont have rear lockers, TC is the closest thing to a limited slip diff so i would leave it on aside from situations like in sand or mud. For everything else, leave TC on.
