  • Greasy Propeller Shaft

    Hi,

My firend bought a kakadu a few months back, yesterday, we were curious and check what's under the chassis, everything looks okay except we noticed some oil or grease in the propeller shaft assembly....it looks like the grease or oil mark is a result of the propeller shaft rotating as the marks are ring-like.....is it normal to have such grease/oil on that area ?

I am not familiar with the mechanical terms so i have attached a few photos of what it looks like....

Just wanted to be sure if its normal to have those grease in that area or do we have to take it for service...

Thank you very much in advance.

its normal for prop shafts to be greased like that and ive seen heaps of cars with that 'ring' however It does looks as if someone has pumped the thing absolutely full of grease...perhaps to alleviate the problem of it binding and then 'clunking' when coming to a stop?

If you start to get a 'clunk' when pulling up at the lights you can get the shaft replaced for a new design if under warranty.
2013 (12 build) GX Auto.......with safari snorkel, toyota bar, tow bar, roof racks, led spots with fancy newpro switchgear, uniden remote UHF and aerial, ARB bash plates, Roadsafe recovery points, digoptions radio, general grabber AT2s, cheap ebay roof rack that has stood up surprisingly well.....

Thanks retro, i just came across this issue with "clunking" on an old thread here PP.....its quite a long thread and haven't read much of it except that it is a known issue and the long term fix the new redesign propshaft....

My question is, how to check if it is the new redesign shaft or still the old problematic"clunking" propshaft ? is this something that can be visually checked or any part number to check?

So far, we have not experience this "clunking" coz maybe it was greased recently before we bought it....

      thank you

Arien, in that thread you mentioned it talks about how to identify modified shafts. Something to do with a serial number if I recall. Those pictures you posted are classic examples of "over greasing" to try and stop the clunk. Under my car used to look like that as well until I had the shaft changed. You will find it also ends up on the back of the car as well (on the spare wheel cover usually).

Thank you Ric39, do you have to pay for the drive shaft replacment? Or this is something that toyota ackbowledges to be a factory issue and rectify them free of charge ?

Depends whether the car is still under warranty. If it is then free of charge. If not then you may be able to get them to agree to supply the part free and you pay labour only. I think this is also mentioned in that same thread.
