  • Sugested spare parts for a Prado 150 GXL for trips in remote areas.

    Hello all
I now have a diesel, automatic GXL and am planning some trips in remote areas. Apart from carrying spare radiator and heater hoses, fan and drive belts, filters, coolents and oils I am at a lost as to what else I should take as spares for the vehicle. I have all the recovery gear, water, food, radio stuff sorted.
    All advice would be welcome.
    Doug

PS: It’s a bugger not having a workshop manual for the vehicle but I have been told the 2015 GXL model is too recent.

Thanks for the links. I was surprised as checking out each one for spares it comes down to just hoses and filters. (Not including tools or other items) I guess being a diesel means spares are limited in scope. I guess the die hards can carry a spare alternator, water pump etc but in a newish vehicle the risk is low ever needing such items.

        IMO,

You won't need anything. If anything maybe an engine.

Do the work before you go, which won't be much.

        1. Scan tool
        2. Fuel filters - both.
        3. Zip ties, tape, glue, silicon, water etc.
        4. Starter
        5. Alternator.

Basic tools, incl 3/8 drive set, metric, Combination Spanners

          Umm...

How about a couple of wheel studs, radiator leak stop product, fuel tank repair kit, tyre repair kit, extra spare tyre with or without rim. Temporary windscreen (usually for rear screen). Maybe the latest available workshop manual even if it isn't exactly the same it will help.

            Just back from a 9000km/4 week trip, circling the Simpson. 2 x 150 Prado, 1 x LC200

            What we USED:
            Fuel filters
            socket set
            spanner set
            Shed load of cloth/electrical/gaffa tape
            shed load of cable ties
            Various nuts n bolts
            cordless drill
            rivet gun (fix trailer)
            Sikaflex car sealant (trailer)
            caulking gun
            multimeter (trailer fridge issue)
            hammer
            Leatherman (x 3)
Block of wood (for under the jack, which we used lots!)
            Air filter
            Cabin aircon filter
            CRC MAF cleaner
            Tyre repair kit
            extra (6th) tyre rubber

We never took any belts/hoses, as all cars were mechanically in good order, and space was limited. I took a few fluids, but never used. I took the 6th tyre, expecting not to touch it, but one punture out of Birdsville was unrepairable, so I (Windorah servo) put the 6th rubber as a spare on the back door.

We just got back from a 5000 km trip to Lake Eyre, what I used was 2 headlamp globes (blew the same day) rhino rack Allen key as two mounts came loose on walkers crossing track, cloth tape to stop bugs getting in the tears in my stepson's swag and the bushman fridge decided it wanted to be a freezer intermittently and reset itself to -18 c.
Took all the usual oils, hoses, belts, bearings, spare tyres nuts studs and brake pads. No punctures or tyre troubles at all.

Last month did a trip along Birdsville Track, Strezlecki Track, Cordillo Downs Rd etc in my 2014 Prado GXL (auto & standard). Took spare fuel & air filter, another spare tyre, puncture repair kit, recovery gear etc etc etc etc. Did 6,500klms over some good and bad outback roads and I am not a slow driver. Replaced tyres with Hankook A/T Light Truck tyres and whilst on the dirt dropped pressures to 28PSI. Towed an off road camper trailer.

Had a great trip with no mechanical issues with Prado at all. No tyre problems either - no punctures. Took all the spare gear as recommended by others and didn't use a thing. Guess we were lucky.

One thing though, the Prado is not very well dust sealed which I was surprised to find given the amount I paid for the new vehicle and the fact it is a 4WD that would be used by many in the Outback. Toyota manual states in dusty conditions to run the A/c on recirc mode. Found by doing this we were choking inside with dust. Took A/c off auto mode, and put fan manually on the highest setting and in fresh air mode changing to recirc briefly when passing another vehicle. Whilst not perfect it was much better doing it this way.

Upon returning I mentioned to the Toyota Service Manager about the amount of dust I was getting in. He said this was normal given the roads I travelled and acknowledged that the manual is incorrect about having A/c on recirc in the dust. Disappointed after spending $60k on a vehicle that is 4WD it is not dust sealed very well.

A spare I carry in my car isn't one for fixing stuff at all. I always have one or two of those 4L water bottles you get from woolies. If you stop for someone out bush that you don't necessarily want to give a lift to you can always offer them a bottle of water. Goes a lot further than you'd ever think.
