  • MAP and Throttle body cleaning

    Hi,

    Owners of 150 V6

Are you doing this regularly? how often?

Is this something that toyota service does as part of the maintenance?

    thanks

I assume your referring to the mass airflow sensor (MAF)?

Generally if it is a hot wire sensor the engine management system "cleans"
the sensor by applying a larger than normal current to it to burn off any
impurites that may have attached to it when you start the car.

I have never noticed any detectable difference on any of my cars after
cleaning the sensor, as the ECU does clean it as above and also tests it
    and compensates for aging etc.

Mind you on all my vehicles there is nothing upstream of the sensor that can
dirty it, maybe if you had a crankcase breather coming in before it or an
oiled filter it might be different.

After just having an EGO sensor fault in one of my cars which took a while to
diagnose I would have thought they would be more of an issue as the EFI mobs
indicate a service life of around 100000Km to 150000Km's, my took the bullet
    at 180000.

These do cause issues, rough running increase fuel comsumption etc, the one
I removed from my car was completely clogged with carbon etc.

    Cheers

      Thanks Leigh for your feedback...

      I was referring to this

I did not know that the EMS performs some sort of cleaning in the sensor as you have mentioned....this is probably the reason why it was never part of toyota service maintenance.

      cheers

He is referring to the MAF sensor, the MAF sensor, Mass Air Flow sensor lives in the
induction tubing before the throttle butterfly if there is one. The MAP sensor, Manifold
Absolute Pressure sensor lives in the inlet manifold.

also note he appears to be using a K&N oil coated filter which is not a good idea as the oil vapor can cause problems with the MAF.
