  • RPM@100 kph GPS

Just wondering if someone with a 150 5 door Prado with stock tyres (265/65R17), 3.0 ltr diesel auto 5 speed box could do me a small favour when next in this situation:

Steady cruising, ideally expressway at 100 or 110 kph as shown on your GPS, not speedo. What rpm are you showing ?

    Thanks..............

Did you want the RPM info at 100km/hr (GPS speed) from a 3 litre diesel with 5 speed auto or manual gearbox or a new 2.8 litre diesel with 6 speed auto or manual?

Actually found the notes I made: (std GXL, Std Tyres 3.0L Auto) measured by Garmin GPS
          40 kph = 1200
          50 kph = 1450
          60 kph = 1280-1300
          70 kph = 1450
          100 kph = 1950-1980

Mines at just under 2k RPM (The right hand side of the needle touching the left hand side of the 2k RPM line) @100km/h and just over 2k RPM (The left hand side of the needle touching the right hand side of the 2k RPM line) @110km/h.

Brilliant ! Thanks gents, wasn't expecting an answer for some time.

That sounds exactly like what I'm getting on my 3 door auto. Spilsy could be looking at my needle in that description, pretty close to what everyone has noted.

I'm just trying to get my head around overall gearing. Toyota told me today that the diff ratio on the 3 door auto is 3.9:1. I believe that's the same as the 5 door diesel manual (?) (which is something like 3.909:1).

The auto 5 door apparently has 3.727 yet the rpm/GPS information you guys have provided tells me that overall gearing between the 5 door auto and my 3 door auto must be virtually identical. For that to be true with a different diff ratio, my internal gearbox ratios or centre diff ratios must be different which I find a little hard to believe.

Can I believe Toyota ? They just referred me to a regular service/spare parts department at my local dealership. Admittedly they went away, looked it up and called me back which was reassuring.

Ideally I want to increase my wheel diameter by 5% but change the diff ratio to retain performance. A 3.9 diff would require 4.1 to do that but I don't want to go ordering parts until I know for sure. (Serves me right for buying the 3 door, no one seems to know anything definitive about the details).

The 5 door diff ratio is also 3.909 both manual and auto in diesel. The petrol is a little taller at 3.7 or something. Was reading all this the other day in my repair manual. The overseas model that have the ancient 5LE donk have a final drive of 4.5 or something which it very short. Must rev like buggery on the highway.

Edit: Just found the page in my manual. Hope that helps.

Agree with this. I did a spreadsheet a while back to back calculate speed and RPM and I couldnt get it to work with 3.727. 3.909 works fairly close.

Nanbar, MacroP, thanks for that, certainly clears that up. I've obviously mistaken data I've seen on the ratios and confused the petrol ratio which is higher geared (makes sense).

So the three door almost certainly has the same drive train from engine to wheel as the 5 door auto 3 ltr diesel. Thanks, that'll help heaps when I start looking for 4.1 diff components to reduce my final drive by 5%. No one lists kits or parts for a 3 door.

Thanks to all responders. Big help.

Just for interest sake, and no other reason
I have a new 2.8L GD Prado, 6 speed auto (less than 1 week old) with stock configuration.
At 100km/hr (exactly as per GPS) Speedo indicates 103.5km/hr, and in 6th gear the engine is doing 1600rpm'
At 100km/hr is 5th gear the engine is doing 1900 rpm.

                      Anyway, just for interest sake

My 5pd auto 3.0L stock std everything reads about the same as yours on the speedo in top gear. About 103-104kph when the GPS is bang on 100kph. With 3-4% oversize tyres, speedo should be close to accurate.

No worries. Another thing to note is your diff is listed on your vin plate inside the passenger door. It tells you the axle code which can be decoded using Google. I think our cars are A02B or something though I would need to double check this. The axle code is 3 parts. The first digit is the diff size (8.something inch), the next two digits are the ratio, and the last digit gives you an idea of the rear diff and how many pinions it has and whether is it an LSD or not though AWD may stuff this up. Not sure if this coding works well for the Prado but Toyota have been using this for decades. The coding is not perfect but back in the day when I was doing many project cars (toyotas of course) it was a good indication of the rear setup especially what type of diff a Cressida or a Supra had as they had the premium toyota gear. It was always good to score a rare LSD and an even rarer Torsen type (these are gold to Toyota enthusiasts). Years ago everyone was putting a v8 in a Hilux and it was good to know that many cars and 4wds had many interchangeable transmissions, diff centres, crown and pinions etc. I was never into Ford and Holden project cars but I certainly did some awesome 80's and 90's Toyota sleepers. Now the 70's vintage stuff interests me and (even further back to the sixties) the holy grail (for me) is the 2000GT. One day when I win Lotto.

Many thanks MacroP. Just back from a week away internet free. Never thought to look at that stuff on the inside of the passenger door frame and indeed it is all there. Transaxle etc, A02A, A750F.

                              Thanks,
