    And that is interesting. That's a huge drop in rpm in 6th, and all from a smaller donk. I did look at the new Pajero Sport (the "new" Challenger) but rejected it for a couple of reasons. One of them was I felt uncomfortable with that tiny little 2.2 litre doing all that work (Amarok only has a 2 litre but then, despite its apparent brilliance, I wouldn't take one of those 'round Australia either).

      An F1 car runs an engine that is 1.6L... And close enough to 1000bhp with recovery systems.

      Don't get hung up on the 200cc reduction. How it performs is the key. I wouldn't get an Amarok either but that is more to do with the whole package than just the motor.

          Interestingly, aviation goes the other way with its piston engine small 'planes. Just an example, only 180 hp from a 5.9 litre flat 4. Reliability being the issue there.

          I'd buy a 2.8 if I could afford it, the engine size not an issue there. I've done a very recent 4wd trip with a mate who turned up with a brand new Hilux 2.8 with 150 klm on the ODO. Very capable right outta the box. He just needs to make sure the boss never finds out.

          I agree with you re the Amarok, it's not the 2 litre donk, it's the whole package.
