  • Tyre levers - What do you recommend?

I want to be set up to change and repair my own tyres while on the track if required. For this reason I am on the look out for a set of good quality tyre levers and would appreciate hearing of any recommendations. (The Prado has standard mag rims and the camper has steel rims so any set would need to do both types.)
    Cheers

    break the bead

How are you going to break the bead? Is the mission from hell which I hope to never do on the side of the track
I got myself some Big Horn Maxxis and was telling my landrover lover mate he said what size did you get I told him 265/75/16 he said I didn't know they came that small.

Thanks for the comments and the video link. As for braking the beads I made up a device I saw being used elsewhere that is inserted into the hitch and stops the jack slipping as shown in the video. My original query is that I did not want to be out on the track and find the tyre irons/levers I bought are crap.

as for tyre levers same as any tool you buy.
          look at quality brands.
Kingchrome etc. might be a good starting point

I doubt my pos 90 series jack would last too long breaking beads while your showing videos how do you intend to hold the wheel while you take the tyre off with the tyre levers?

No need to hold the rim, plenty of detergent for lube or tyre soap on the tyre and a couple of pieces of hard plastic tube slit length ways to protect the rim from the levers. I fitted 8 internal tpms sensors at home (car and trailer - same rims and tyres) with this method without any dramas and I am pretty confident I can do the same out bush. Also helps having changed many truck tyres over the years - though with a proper bead breaker.

You blokes are making it sound easy the other day I took about 20 commodore tyres off the rims so I could get rid of them so believe it or not i have changed a few tyres I still think if your going as far as taking a spare tyre take have them on spare rims. How much air does it take to pump up a mud tyre remaking the bead would be the next question? Its not a tractor so you can't really pour water over it and have the water end up in the tyre.

I have a set of the Tyre Pliers with the adjustable breaker feature for differing rim sizes. In all my travels, despite a handful of punctures, I have never had to use them. I've used the temporary plugs a couple of times. One trip it took 3 plugs to fill the hole and didn't stop the leak. I have 6 rims/tyres for the car and can also use the camper trailer spare if needed. The trailer tyres have never had a flat.

Did plenty in my younger days living, working and travelling in very remote areas of the NT. No bead breaker just used to run over the edge of the tire with the landcruiser to break it. Put a new tube in or repair the old one. Even fixed a staked tyre with conveyor splicing compound and a few patches inside the tyre and ran it tubeless for another 40k. It's not that hard but probably a dying art these days when many people get everything done by someone else!

                          not saying it is easy.
But have removed tyres from rims manually a few times.
if your in a situation where you have no choice it would be good to know how to do it.

You are right on the money Fred63 when you say: "If your in a situation where you have no choice it would be good to know how to do it."

BTW I decided on Mumme tyre irons being Aussie made and professional quality.

My nephew has successfully reseated the bead by spraying deodorant into the space and then lighting it. The resulting little explosion does the job. I am sure there are similar alternatives, CRC or other aerosols.
