  • Fuel Leaking

    G'day all,
Just thought I'd run something past you all to see if there are any further ideas to my situation.
I've recently noticed a fuel leak on my 150. It appears to be coming from somewhere around the crossmember around the rear differential.I have an aftermarket long range tank so access is difficult.
The leak will only occur when the car is being filled up at the petrol station and will drop about a 40cm puddle. Does not occur at any other time. I still get 1800km to my tank which is normal for it so it must not be leaking whilst driving (or at least leaking anything significant).
This leads me to believe that it is something to do with the filler hose. I have checked the breather and there is no leak there and checked the large soft filling line and it is not coming from there (different area).
For those familiar with the LRA prado 150 tank the leak is coming from the area where the big U bolts go over the crossmember. There is that much dirty diesel soaked mud around that area that I have no idea where exactly.
I tried shining a bright torch down the filler neck tonight and looking under the car for any areas of light escaping but none seen.
The only other thing I can think of is that it is a leak from the tank itself right at the top of it so when it is full it leaks from there as fuel is pushed into it with a bit of pressure however i am a little skeptical of this because I was almost on the fuel light tonight and put in 140L. Rear tank is 136L and front is the standard 87L. That means (by the way the prado drinks fuel from rear first) that 136L of the 140 i put in went straight into the rear tank which doesn't seem possible with the way the filling hoses are set up.
I't booked in for next thurs at the mechanics where they will drop the tank and take a look at it but in the meantime can anyone think of anything? I'm not too upset about the leak, more annoyed that I just have no idea where it is coming from.

    Cheers!

From what you describe I would have thought to be somewhere in the filler pipe. Does it matter how full the tanks are when you refill? Could it be something associated to the way the after-market long range tank was fitted?

It certainly sounds like the filler is the likely culprit. The tank has been fitted for 18 months and last week is the first time I've seen it do it.

sounds like it might be the breather line that runs back to the filler pipe.
if it only does it when filling up.

I checked that one and no go. I did find the hose clamps on it loose and a small amount of leak. Tightened and cleaned the area. I noticed while cleaning that the water running off the pipe dripped from a different area and when i filled up again with fuel it still leaked. tank breather not culprit either.
